Full title and description

Organization and digitization of information about buildings and civil engineering works, including building information modelling (BIM) — Information management using building information modelling — Part 2: Delivery phase of the assets. This International Standard specifies requirements for information management and a management process to support the delivery (design and construction) phase of built assets using BIM.

Abstract

ISO 19650-2:2018 defines the information management process for the delivery phase of assets, covering activities from assessment of need, invitation to tender and tender response, through appointment and mobilization, to collaborative production of information, information model delivery and project close‑out. It sets requirements for project and exchange information requirements, roles and responsibilities (including information managers), use of a common data environment (CDE) and information delivery milestones to enable consistent, auditable exchange of information during delivery of assets.

General information

  • Status: Published.
  • Publication date: December 2018.
  • Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
  • ICS / categories: 93.010; 35.240.67; 91.010.01.
  • Edition / version: Edition 1 (2018).
  • Number of pages: 26 (ISO published edition).

Scope

Applies to all types and sizes of built assets and organizations, regardless of procurement strategy, that need to manage information during the delivery phase. The standard prescribes a management process for the exchange and production of project information using BIM and is intended to be used by appointing parties, prospective lead appointed parties and appointed parties to define information requirements, set delivery milestones, establish the project information standard and enable collaborative production of information in a CDE.

Key topics and requirements

  • Definition of the information management process for the delivery phase (assessment of need, tendering, appointment, mobilization, collaborative production, model delivery, close‑out).
  • Establishment of Project Information Requirements (PIR) and Exchange Information Requirements (EIR) or appointing‑party information requirements.
  • Roles and responsibilities: appointing party, lead appointed party, information manager/BIM manager and other delivery team roles.
  • Use and governance of a Common Data Environment (CDE) for controlled information sharing and status coding.
  • Specification of information delivery milestones and the level/amount of information required at each milestone (level of information need).
  • Requirements for tendering and appointment information, including information protocol content and contract/appointment information delivery obligations.
  • Processes for collaborative production, verification, validation and handover of information models and asset information models (PIM → AIM).

Typical use and users

Used by clients and appointing parties to specify information requirements; by lead appointed parties and delivery teams (architects, engineers, contractors, specialist designers) to plan and produce information; by information/BIM managers to coordinate the CDE and information processes; and by asset managers/operators to define information needed for operation and handover. Also referenced by procurement, contract and quality teams to embed information management into appointments.

Related standards

Part of the ISO 19650 series. Directly linked to ISO 19650-1 (concepts and principles) and complements later parts addressing the operational phase, information exchange and security (other parts of ISO 19650). ISO 19650-2 supersedes or replaces aspects of earlier national documents such as PAS 1192-2; national adoptions (for example BS EN ISO 19650-2) exist and may include national forewords/annexes with different page counts.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 19650-2:2018 is an international standard that specifies requirements and a process for information management during the delivery phase (design and construction) of built assets using BIM.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers the information management lifecycle for delivery appointments including assessment of need, tendering, appointment, mobilization, collaborative production of information, model delivery and project close‑out, together with roles, information requirements and use of a CDE.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Clients/appointing parties, lead appointed parties, architects, engineers, contractors, information/BIM managers, procurement and contract teams, and asset managers involved in the delivery and handover of built assets.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: ISO 19650-2:2018 is the published 2018 edition (Edition 1). It forms part of a living series that is periodically reviewed; national adoptions and guidance may be updated. Check the issuing body for the most recent review status for your country or sector.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes — it is Part 2 of the ISO 19650 series. Part 1 covers concepts and principles; other parts address operational phase, information exchange, security and additional topics in the series.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: BIM, information management, delivery phase, common data environment, project information requirements, exchange information requirements, information manager, collaborative production, information model delivery.
