Full title and description

GOST 2.051-2013 — Unified system for design documentation. Digital documents. General principles. The standard sets out terms, general principles and mandatory requirements for the preparation, versioning, storage, transfer and authentication of electronic design (engineering) documents used within the Unified System for Design Documentation (ESKD).

Abstract

This intergovernmental (GOST) standard establishes general provisions for electronic design documentation (electronic constructural documents — DЭ), including definitions (electronic document, information unit, version, visualization), rules for composing the descriptive (requisite) and substantive parts of electronic documents, requirements for integrity and authentication (electronic signatures and informational-authenticating sheets), and guidance for storage, exchange and visualization of electronic documents and their paper representations. It is intended as the baseline for related standards that address format, 3D models, changes and operational documents.

General information

  • Status: Withdrawn / application terminated on the territory of the Russian Federation (superseded by a national revision).
  • Publication date: Adopted 2013; introduced for use in the Russian Federation from 1 June 2014.
  • Publisher: Adopted as a межгосударственный стандарт (GOST) — prepared by VNIINMASH and submitted by the Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology (Rosstandart); issued under the EASC / Rosstandart system.
  • ICS / categories: 01.110 (Technical drawing / design documentation).
  • Edition / version: 2013 edition (GOST 2.051—2013).
  • Number of pages: approximately 16 pages in published PDF editions (published electronic document length varies by publisher).

Scope

GOST 2.051-2013 applies to electronic design (engineering) documents of products across all industrial sectors and establishes the general rules that govern electronic document structure, mandatory requisites, versioning and status, visualization (printing and screen), information units (files or sets of files treated as a single document), rules for integrity and authentication (including use of electronic digital signatures), and principles for exchange and archival storage. The standard is intended as a framework from which more specific standards (for formats, 3D models, change rules, operational documents, etc.) are derived.

Key topics and requirements

  • Definitions and terminology for electronic constructural documents, information units and versions.
  • Structure of electronic documents: requisite (metadata) part and substantive part; mandatory requisites and their treatment in electronic form.
  • Versioning and status management (distinction between versions and changes, rules for numbering and documenting versions).
  • Visualization and paper representations: rules for producing human-readable visualizations and printed copies that conform to ESKD requirements.
  • Integrity, authentication and electronic signatures: requirements for ensuring authenticity and integrity of electronic documents and for informational-authenticating sheets (UL).
  • Rules for exchange, transfer and storage of electronic documents, including use of information units and recommended practices for system-to-system transfer (to be complemented by standards such as ГОСТ 2.511 and related documents).
  • Normative references and interplay with related ESKD standards (references to ГОСТ 2.001, 2.004, 2.102, 2.104, 2.501, 2.511, 2.601, etc.).

Typical use and users

Primary users are mechanical, electrical and product design engineers; technical documentation specialists; document control and records management personnel; PLM/PDM system integrators; software vendors supporting ESKD workflows; quality and compliance auditors; and organizations that exchange engineering documentation with partners across the EASC / CIS region. The standard is used to set up internal document management procedures, to implement versioning and signing workflows, and to ensure interoperability when exchanging electronic design documentation.

Related standards

GOST 2.051-2013 is part of the ESKD suite and references and interrelates with numerous ESKD standards, including (but not limited to): ГОСТ 2.001 (general principles), ГОСТ 2.004 (general requirements for output devices), ГОСТ 2.102 (document types and completeness), ГОСТ 2.104 (main inscriptions), ГОСТ 2.501 (rules for accounting and storage), ГОСТ 2.511 (rules for transfer of electronic design documents), ГОСТ 2.601 / 2.602 (operational and repair documents), and with national revisions such as ГОСТ Р 2.051-2023 which later updated the national practice.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: GOST 2.051-2013 is an intergovernmental (GOST) standard that defines general principles and mandatory requirements for electronic design (engineering) documents within the Unified System for Design Documentation (ESKD).

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers terminology, structure of electronic documents (requisite and substantive parts), rules for versions and status, visualization and printing, integrity and authentication (including electronic signatures and informational-authenticating sheets), and high-level rules for storage and exchange of electronic design documents.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Designers, technical documentation specialists, document control and records managers, PLM/PDM integrators, software vendors and auditors operating in environments that follow ESKD/GOST requirements.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: The 2013 interstate edition was introduced for use in Russia from 1 June 2014, but its application on the territory of the Russian Federation was formally ended (ceased) on 1 March 2024 and national practice is governed by a subsequent national document (ГОСТ Р 2.051-2023). For contemporary application check the current national standard in the target jurisdiction.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes — it belongs to the ESKD (Unified System for Design Documentation) family of standards (series ГОСТ 2.xxx) that together define rules for drawings, documents, inscriptions, formats, storage, transfer and related topics. It is referenced alongside other ESKD standards listed above.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Electronic document (ДЭ), information unit (ИЕ), version, visualization, electronic digital signature (ЭЦП), informational-authenticating sheet (УЛ), PDM/PLM, ESKD, integrity, metadata.
