Full title and description

GOST R 51274-99 — Vessels and apparatus. Apparatuses of column type. Norms and methods of strength calculations. National Russian standard specifying methods for strength (structural) calculation of vertical column-type vessels subject to internal/external pressure, self-weight and external loads (wind, seismic, eccentric dead loads) and requirements for support and anchoring elements.

Abstract

This standard establishes the calculation procedures, checked cross-sections and loading combinations for column-type vessels (vertical cylindrical and variable-section columns). It covers design sections to be verified (shell and support shell junctions, support shell holes and connection to bottom ring), calculation of design pressures and loads (working, test, installation), bending moments from weight, wind and seismic actions, special checks for supports and anchor bolts and required reference symbols and tables (including allowable anchor-bolt stresses).

General information

  • Status: Withdrawn / superseded (replaced by GOST 34233.9-2017).
  • Publication date: Approved 6 May 1999; introduced into effect 1 January 2000; text amendment 17 February 2006.
  • Publisher: Gosstandart of Russia (Federal Agency on Technical Regulating and Metrology, Rosstandart).
  • ICS / categories: ICS 71.120.20 (Columns) — Equipment for the chemical industry / column-type vessels.
  • Edition / version: Original issue 1999 (effective 01.01.2000); editorial amendment issued 17.02.2006.
  • Number of pages: 16 pages.

Scope

Applies to vertical column-type vessels and apparatus operating under internal gauge pressure or external pressure and subjected to their own weight, bending moments from wind and seismic loads, and bending moments from eccentrically applied dead loads (including connected piping and equipment). The standard defines which cross-sections must be checked, the load cases and combinations, and the required checks for support assemblies and anchor bolts.

Key topics and requirements

  • Definition of checked design sections (shell at support-shell junction, support shell at junctions and openings, connection to bottom support ring).
  • Calculation of design pressures for working and test conditions, referencing general pressure-vessel rules.
  • Load types to include: self-weight (operational, hydrostatic test, erection conditions), wind loads and seismic loads, eccentric dead loads from attachments and piping.
  • Methods to compute bending moments and their combinations for operation, test and erection states.
  • Rules for support-shell design, support assembly components and detailing of anchor-bolt checks (including allowable stresses and concrete interaction considerations).
  • Use of standard symbols and dimensional conventions (appendices listing letter symbols and allowable stresses for anchor bolts at 20 °C).
  • Normative references and interaction with companion standards (pressure definitions, wind/seismic load calculation standard for column-type vessels).

Typical use and users

Used by mechanical and structural engineers, vessel designers and fabricators, petrochemical and process-plant engineers, certification bodies and inspectors involved in the design, verification and certification of vertical column-type pressure vessels and process towers (distillation columns, absorbers, stripping columns, etc.). Commonly applied during design, verification, fabrication review and safety assessments.

Related standards

Key related and successor documents include general pressure-vessel strength calculation standards and the wind/seismic calculation standard for columns. Notable related documents: GOST 14249 (pressure-vessel strength calculation rules), GOST R 51273-99 (wind and seismic load determination for column-type apparatus), and the later consolidated series GOST 34233.x — specifically GOST 34233.9-2017 (Vessels and apparatus. Norms and methods of strength calculation. Apparatus of column type), which supersedes GOST R 51274-99.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: GOST R 51274-99 is a Russian national standard that defined norms and methods for strength (structural) calculations of column-type (vertical) vessels and apparatus.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers which cross-sections of column-type vessels must be checked, calculation of design pressures and loads (working/test/installation), bending moments from weight, wind and seismic actions, and checks for supports and anchor bolts, plus related symbols and allowable stresses.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Mechanical and structural engineers, vessel and column designers, fabricators, inspection and certification bodies, and process-plant engineers in chemical, petrochemical, oil & gas and related industries.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: It has been superseded. GOST R 51274-99 was introduced on 1 January 2000 and later replaced by the consolidated standard GOST 34233.9-2017 (introduced 1 August 2018). The 1999/2000 edition is treated as withdrawn in favor of the newer GOST 34233 series.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes. It was part of a set of GOST/GOST R documents dealing with strength calculation of vessels and apparatus. The GOST 34233.x series (published 2017) now provides the consolidated set of strength-calculation methods for various vessel types (including column-type apparatus in part 9).

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Column-type vessels, pressure vessels, strength calculation, wind loads, seismic loads, support shell, anchor bolts, design sections, petrochemical equipment.
