Full title and description

GOST R 51858-2002 — "Нефть. Общие технические условия" (English: "Crude petroleum. General specifications"). The standard establishes general technical conditions, classification, quality requirements, sampling and test methods, marking and handling requirements for crude petroleum intended for shipment, transport, domestic supply and export from the Russian Federation.

Abstract

This national standard defines classes, types and conditional designations of crude oil; sets limits and acceptance rules for key quality parameters (sulfur, hydrogen sulfide, organic chlorides, mechanical impurities, density, fractional composition and vapour pressure); specifies sampling and testing procedures and references to test-method standards; and covers safety, marking, packaging, transportation and documentation requirements applicable to crude petroleum put into circulation or supplied for export. (Original adopted July 1, 2002; later editions and amendments exist; the 2002 edition has been superseded by a 2020 revision.)

General information

  • Status: Replaced / superseded (original 2002 national standard; superseded by GOST R 51858-2020).
  • Publication date: Introduced 01 July 2002 (original adoption). Some databases list administrative dates and subsequent amendment notices.
  • Publisher: National Standard of the Russian Federation (Rosstandart) — issued as a national standard; printed/managed editions published by Standardinform and other official collections.
  • ICS / categories: 75.040 — Extraction and processing of crude petroleum; related petrochemical product categories.
  • Edition / version: Original: ГОСТ Р 51858-2002 (with later amendments published as information updates and corrections); formally replaced by ГОСТ Р 51858-2020 (the 2020 revision is the current successor standard).
  • Number of pages: Commonly published editions of the 2002 text are shown as approximately 13–15 pages depending on the publisher/reissue (13 pages is a typical count cited in standards catalogs).

Scope

The standard applies to crude petroleum prepared for transport and/or use, intended for transfer to transport organizations, to enterprises within the Russian Federation and for export. It provides rules for classification, batch definition, acceptance and handing-over tests, documentation (passports) and safety/handling requirements for crude oil in commerce. The document does not replace specific product technical regulations but provides uniform technical conditions for crude oil quality and testing in trade and transport.

Key topics and requirements

  • Classification and conditional designation of crude oil by class, type, group and kind (including designation rules for export shipments).
  • Quality parameters and limit values: total sulfur (class ranges), hydrogen sulfide content, organic chlorides, mechanical impurities, water content, density (API), fractional composition and vapour pressure.
  • Acceptance/lot rules: definition of a batch/party, documentation and passport requirements accompanying shipments.
  • Sampling procedures and requirements for spot and composite samples; rules for forming acceptance vs laboratory samples (references to GOST sampling standards).
  • Required test methods and references to normative test standards (GOST/GOST R references and allowable alternative methods, including some accepted international/ASTM methods where noted).
  • Safety, hazard classification and handling: classification of oil by hazard class, requirements for personal protection, transport/packaging/marking rules and fire safety measures.
  • Rules for resolving disagreements in quality assessment (specified reference test methods and arbitration procedures).

Typical use and users

Used by crude oil producers, terminal and pipeline operators, shippers/receivers, refiners and traders, testing laboratories, certification bodies and regulatory authorities. The standard supports contractual quality specifications, export documentation and laboratory testing protocols for crude oil transactions and transport.

Related standards

Related and referenced documents include (examples): GOST R 51858-2020 (successor national standard); various GOST and GOST R test-method standards for sulfur determination (e.g., GOST 32139, GOST R 51947), density and API gravity methods (GOST/GOST R references), sampling standards (GOST 2517) and transport/marking standards (GOST 1510). International methods (for reference) such as relevant ASTM methods (for density, fractionation, vapor pressure) are also cross-referenced in annexes. For contractual or regulatory purposes, users should consult the successor standard (2020) and any applicable regulatory technical regulations.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ГОСТ Р 51858-2002 is the Russian national standard titled "Нефть. Общие технические условия" (Crude petroleum. General specifications). It sets general technical requirements, classification and testing/acceptance rules for crude oil.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers classification (classes/types/groups), conditional designations, key quality parameters and their limits, sampling and testing procedures (with references to normative methods), batch/lot definitions and documentation, marking/transport/handling and safety requirements for crude petroleum in commercial circulation and export.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Oil producers, pipeline and terminal operators, shippers and receivers, refiners, trading companies, testing laboratories, conformity assessment bodies and regulators involved in crude oil supply, transport and export.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: The 2002 edition has been superseded by ГОСТ Р 51858-2020; the 2002 text remains a historical/reference edition but for current normative requirements users should refer to the 2020 revision and the associated Rosstandart implementation schedule and orders. Administrative implementation dates for the 2020 revision have been adjusted by Rosstandart orders (consult the official registry or Rosstandart publications for the present effective date).

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: It is part of the set of national standards covering crude oil and petroleum products (OKS 75.040). It references and is used alongside numerous GOST/GOST R standards for sampling, test methods and transport/packaging (for example, GOST 2517, GOST 32139 and others), and interacts with later national or interstate standards on crude oil.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Crude oil; quality; classification; sulfur; hydrogen sulfide; sampling; testing; export; transport; GOST R 51858.
