Full title and description

GOST 26996-86 — "Polypropylene and copolymers of propylene. Technical conditions." National standard originally approved by the State Committee for Standards of the USSR that establishes technical specifications, quality requirements, testing and acceptance rules, marking, packaging, storage and transportation requirements for polypropylene homopolymers and propylene–ethylene copolymers produced by low- and medium-pressure polymerization with organometallic catalysts.

Abstract

This standard defines grades, normative designations and the principal technical requirements for polypropylene (PP) and propylene copolymers used in industrial processing. It covers physical and mechanical property limits (for example density and melt flow), required test methods (by reference to other standards), sampling and acceptance procedures, and rules for marking, packaging and storage. The standard expressly excludes polypropylene intended for capacitor film.

General information

  • Status: Active (maintained in Russian/GOST databases; historically an interstate/USSR standard).
  • Publication date: Approved 23 September 1986; put into effect 1 January 1988.
  • Publisher: State Committee for Standards of the USSR (Gosstandart); published by the Standards Publishing House and subsequently distributed via national standards/electronic libraries and commercial standards publishers.
  • ICS / categories: 83.080 — Plastics; more specifically 83.080.20 (thermoplastic materials).
  • Edition / version: Original designation GOST 26996-86 (1986). The standard includes later amendments (recorded in the late 1980s and early 1990s) and has been republished in library/collections (notably reprints and database updates in subsequent years).
  • Number of pages: Approximately 36 pages (standard text plus tables and normative references).

Scope

GOST 26996-86 applies to polypropylene produced by polymerization of propylene and to propylene–ethylene copolymers produced in the presence of organometallic catalysts at low and medium pressures. It sets mandatory quality and safety-related requirements for general-purpose and industrial grades of PP used for molding, extrusion, sheet and other common conversions, but it does not apply to specialized PP for capacitor film production.

Key topics and requirements

  • Definition of product scope and exclusion (polypropylene for capacitor film excluded).
  • Designation and grade system for homopolymers and copolymers (normative markings and trade names).
  • Physical and rheological characteristics (typical parameters such as density and melt flow / melt flow index ranges for grades).
  • Mechanical and thermal properties requirements (strength, impact resistance, heat deflection parameters where applicable).
  • Requirements for additives, fillers and permissible impurities; rules for composition control.
  • Sampling, test methods and references to other GOSTs for determination of properties (sampling procedure, laboratory testing protocols).
  • Acceptance, marking, packaging, storage and transportation rules to preserve quality.
  • Provisions for quality documentation, certificates of conformity and handling of nonconforming batches.

Typical use and users

Manufacturers and suppliers of polypropylene resins, polymer production quality laboratories, processors (injection molders, extruders, sheet and film producers), purchasing and procurement departments specifying polymer grades, testing laboratories and certification bodies, and engineers developing product specifications or regulatory documentation use this standard as the normative benchmark for PP material properties and acceptance criteria within markets that reference GOST standards.

Related standards

GOST 26996-86 references and is related to numerous testing and materials standards that specify methods and safety requirements (examples include national GOST methods for impact testing, rheology and chemical reagents). In the international context, related documents include ISO standards for polypropylene materials and test methods (for example standards covering extruded PP sheets and general plastic test methods). Users typically consult the referenced GOSTs for specific test procedures cited in the normative references section of GOST 26996-86.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: GOST 26996-86 is a national standard that defines technical specifications and quality requirements for polypropylene and propylene–ethylene copolymers produced by low- and medium-pressure polymerization; it was approved in 1986 and came into force on 1 January 1988.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers product scope and exclusions, grade designations, required physical, mechanical and rheological characteristics, allowable additives/impurities, sampling and test methods (by reference), acceptance criteria, marking, packaging, storage and transport rules, and documentation of conformity.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Resin producers, downstream processors (molding, extrusion, sheet/film producers), QC/testing laboratories, procurement/specification engineers, and certification or regulatory agencies operating in markets that adopt or reference GOST standards.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: The original standard is designated GOST 26996-86 (1986). It has registered amendments and has been maintained in national standards databases; users should verify the current status in their national standards registry or national mirror to confirm whether a more recent national replacement or additional technical regulations apply for their jurisdiction or product application.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: It belongs to the plastics/thermoplastics family of standards (ICS 83.080.20) and is linked by normative references to other GOST documents that define specific test methods and safety rules; it is commonly used alongside other material- and test-method GOSTs and with applicable international plastics standards where cross-reference is required.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Polypropylene, copolymers of propylene, technical conditions, PP grades, melt flow index, density, sampling, testing, packaging, storage, thermoplastic materials.
