Universal motor oils and oils for automotive carburetor engines. Specifications
Full title and description
GOST 10541-2020 — "Масла моторные универсальные и для автомобильных карбюраторных двигателей. Технические условия" (English: "Universal motor oils and oils for automotive carburetor engines. Specifications"). The standard establishes technical conditions, classification and basic requirements for universal motor oils and motor oils intended for lubrication of automotive carburetor engines and related applications.
Abstract
This national/interstate standard defines the scope, normative references, required physicochemical properties, testing methods and requirements for marking, packaging and storage of universal motor oils and oils for automotive carburetor engines. It replaces the earlier GOST 10541-78 and adapts test and safety references to current GOST and ISO methods.
General information
- Status: Active / in force (entered into effect as a national standard on 1 July 2021).
- Publication date: Approved October 22, 2020; introduced (effective) July 1, 2021.
- Publisher: Adopted by the Interstate Council on Standardization, Metrology and Certification; introduced as a national standard by Rosstandart (Russian Federation).
- ICS / categories: 75.100 — Lubricants, industrial oils and related products; Petroleum processing and related production.
- Edition / version: Edition: GOST 10541-2020 (supersedes GOST 10541-78).
- Number of pages: Published formats list approximately 12–14 pages depending on publisher/format.
Scope
The standard applies to universal motor oils used for lubrication of automotive carburetor engines and autotractor diesel engines, as well as to automotive motor oils intended specifically for carburetor-engine lubrication. It covers technical conditions (specifications) for product composition, required properties, test methods, marking, packaging and storage. The standard is intended for use across national participants of the interstate standards system that adopted the document.
Key topics and requirements
- Definitions and classification of universal motor oils and oils for carburetor engines.
- Mandatory physicochemical property limits (examples: kinematic viscosity and viscosity grades, density, flash point, pour point, sulfated ash or ash content, acidity/total base number where applicable, sulfur and other compositional limits) as specified in the standard.
- Required test methods and references to GOST / ISO test procedures (for example, density and related methods referenced to GOST ISO 12185 and other national test methods cited in the normative references).
- Requirements for packaging, marking, storage conditions and shelf life statements appropriate for motor oils.
- Occupational safety, environmental and handling references (cross-references to relevant GOST R safety standards and rules for emissions and handling of petroleum products).
- Normative references listing multiple GOST and GOST‑ISO documents used for test methods and safety (the standard includes a substantive normative references section).
Typical use and users
Manufacturers and formulators of motor oils, quality control and testing laboratories, automotive and agricultural equipment maintenance organizations, procurement specialists in transportation and fleet management, national conformity assessment bodies and regulators use this standard to specify, test and accept universal motor oils and oils for carburetor engines.
Related standards
GOST 10541-78 (superseded); numerous referenced test and safety standards such as GOST ISO 12185 (density), various GOST R occupational safety and emissions standards and other GOST/GOST‑ISO documents listed in the normative references of GOST 10541-2020. The standard is referenced by or connected with later normative documents dealing with environmental safety and petroleum product handling.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: GOST 10541-2020 is the national/interstate specification standard that defines technical conditions for universal motor oils and oils for automotive carburetor engines (classification, required properties, test methods, marking and packaging).
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers product scope, normative references, physicochemical requirements, required test methods (referencing appropriate GOST/ISO methods), and rules for marking, packaging, storage and handling for these motor oils.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Oil manufacturers, QA/QC and testing laboratories, automotive service providers, procurement and regulatory bodies involved in conformity assessment and environmental/safety oversight.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: GOST 10541-2020 is current (in force) and entered into effect on July 1, 2021; it replaces GOST 10541-78. An editorial correction/amendment (Popravka) has been published and recorded (IUS No. 12‑2024).
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: It is part of the national/interstate suite of standards for petroleum products and lubricants and cross-references many GOST and GOST‑ISO test-method standards; it functions within the broader class of lubricant and petroleum product standards (ICS 75.100).
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Motor oil, universal motor oil, carburetor engine oil, lubricant specification, viscosity, flash point, GOST 10541, packaging, marking, test methods.
