Full title and description

GOST 22483-2021 — "Conductors for cables, wires and cords" (Russian: Жилы токопроводящие для кабелей, проводов и шнуров). This interstate (GOST) standard adapts and modifies the content of IEC 60228:2004 to establish requirements for current-carrying conductors used in a wide range of cable, wire and cord products.

Abstract

Specifies technical requirements, classification, constructional characteristics and test criteria for single-wire and multi-wire conductors made of copper, aluminium and aluminium alloys intended for stationary cable installations, self‑supporting insulated and protected overhead conductors, and flexible conductors. The standard sets nominal cross-sections, limits for electrical resistance and requirements for numbers and diameters of component wires.

General information

  • Status: Active (in force).
  • Publication date: Adopted May 14, 2021; introduced into force 1 September 2021.
  • Publisher: Interstate standard (EASC) — implemented/introduced for Russia by Rosstandart (Federal Agency on Technical Regulating and Metrology); available from national standards publishers.
  • ICS / categories: 29.060.01 (Electrical engineering — electric wires and cables).
  • Edition / version: Edition 2021 (replaces GOST 22483-2012).
  • Number of pages: 24 pages (typical published text length).

Key bibliographic and status details above are taken from the official introduction order and standard registries.

Scope

The standard applies to single‑core (solid) and multi‑core (stranded) conductors of copper, aluminium and aluminium alloys for use in cables, wires and cords across a broad set of constructions: fixed-installation cables, self-supporting insulated overhead conductors and protected aerial conductors, and flexible conductors for cords and flexible cables. It covers conductor classification, permitted constructions (number and diameter of strands), nominal cross-sectional areas (up to large sizes), and requirements for electrical resistance and routine/acceptance testing.

Key topics and requirements

  • Materials and permitted conductor types: copper, aluminium and aluminium alloys.
  • Classification of conductor constructions and flexibility classes (solid and various stranded/flexible constructions).
  • Nominal cross-sectional areas and dimensional requirements (tables for standard sizes up to large conductors).
  • Requirements on number and diameter of component wires for stranded conductors.
  • Limits on DC electrical resistance at specified temperatures and associated test methods.
  • Mechanical and electrical acceptance tests and inspection rules for production and supplied conductors.
  • References and alignment with IEC 60228:2004 where applicable, with national modifications noted in the text.

These topics reflect the main normative clauses and tables of the standard.

Typical use and users

Used by cable and wire manufacturers, component suppliers, product designers and engineers, testing and certification laboratories, utilities and contractors, and regulatory/standards bodies involved in specifying, producing, testing and approving conductors for electrical installations and overhead lines. The standard is referenced in procurement, quality control and type-testing procedures for conductor production.

Related standards

Main related documents: IEC 60228:2004 (base international standard) and the previous national/interstate edition GOST 22483-2012 (now superseded). Other cable and product standards (for insulation, sheathing, flame tests and cable assembly) are commonly used in conjunction with GOST 22483-2021.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: GOST 22483-2021 is an interstate standard that specifies requirements for current-carrying conductors used in cables, wires and cords, based on and aligned with IEC 60228:2004.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers single‑wire and stranded conductor designs made of copper, aluminium and aluminium alloys, including classification, dimensional requirements, limits for electrical resistance, and procedures for testing and acceptance.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Cable and wire manufacturers, designers and engineers, testing laboratories, utilities and procurement/specification teams use the standard for design, production and quality control of conductors.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: It is current (active) and entered into force on 1 September 2021; it superseded GOST 22483-2012. The adoption was formalized by the Rosstandart introduction order dated 14 May 2021.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: It is the national/interstate implementation of IEC 60228:2004 and sits within the family of cable and wire standards (related GOST/IEC documents cover insulation, sheathing, flame tests, cable construction and installation). It is the 2021 edition of the GOST 22483 series of documents.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Conductors, copper, aluminium, stranded, solid, electrical resistance, conductor classes, cable components, IEC 60228.
