Full title and description
Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components - Basic test and measurement procedures - Part 3-33: Examinations and measurements - Withdrawal force from a resilient alignment sleeve using pin gauges. This document defines a standardized method to measure the withdrawal (breakaway) force between a pin gauge and a resilient alignment sleeve used with single‑fibre cylindrical ferrule optical connectors.
Abstract
IEC 61300-3-33:2022 (3rd edition) specifies apparatus, test setup, procedure and reporting requirements for measuring the force required to withdraw a pin gauge from a resilient alignment sleeve (split sleeve). The method is intended to provide repeatable, comparable data for single‑fibre cylindrical ferrule connector systems, supporting quality control, design verification and interchangeability assessments. The 2022 edition replaces the 2012 edition and includes updated apparatus drawings, harmonized terminology (gauge pin → pin gauge) and defined pin gauge requirements; a corrigendum was issued on 1 May 2023 and is incorporated in current copies.
General information
- Status: Published — International Standard (3rd edition); Corrigendum 1 issued 1 May 2023 (included).
- Publication date: 28 January 2022.
- Publisher: International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
- ICS / categories: 33.180.20 (Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components).
- Edition / version: Edition 3.0 (2022).
- Number of pages: 24 (official IEC publication).
Scope
This standard applies to measurement of the withdrawal force between a pin gauge and a resilient alignment sleeve used with single‑fibre cylindrical ferrule optical connectors. It covers the required test apparatus and geometries, pin gauge specification and tolerances, specimen preparation, test procedure (including loading velocity and preconditioning), data recording and reporting. The document is intended to provide reproducible test results for use in product specification, quality control, design validation and interchangeability studies; it does not itself set product acceptance thresholds (these are defined by manufacturers, purchasers or product specifications).
Key topics and requirements
- Defined test apparatus and fixture geometry for consistent measurement of withdrawal force.
- Specified pin gauge requirements and tolerances (sizes and dimensional criteria) to simulate a ferrule.
- Procedures for specimen preparation, preconditioning and test sequencing to improve repeatability.
- Normative requirements for loading/withdrawal velocity and for force measurement instrumentation and calibration.
- Reporting requirements specifying which details must be recorded (apparatus, pin gauge, sleeve type, test conditions, results and statistical treatment).
- Notes and guidance on repeatability, sources of variability (friction, sleeve material, guide pin finish) and interpretation of results.
- Inclusion of a corrigendum addressing minor editorial/technical clarifications (issued 1 May 2023).
Typical use and users
Typical users include fibre‑optic connector and alignment‑sleeve (split sleeve) manufacturers, component suppliers, test and calibration laboratories, OEMs and system integrators performing design verification, procurement and incoming inspection, and quality assurance teams establishing production test procedures. The method is used to verify sleeve retention characteristics, to compare sleeve designs or materials, and to support interchangeability and reliability assessments for connector systems.
Related standards
IEC 61300-3-33 is part of the IEC 61300 series of basic test and measurement procedures. Commonly referenced related standards include: IEC 61300-1 (general test and measurement guidance), IEC 61300-3-35 (visual inspection of connector end faces), IEC 61300-3-51 (pin gauge withdrawal force for rectangular multi‑fibre ferrules), the IEC 61754 series (connector interface standards) and various parts of IEC 61755/IEC 63267 that define connector performance and interface characteristics. Product and acceptance criteria are typically specified in connector family standards or customer specifications.
