Full title and description
Maritime navigation and radiocommunication equipment and systems — Track control systems — Operational and performance requirements, methods of testing and required test results. This IEC standard specifies minimum operational and performance requirements for shipborne track control systems, together with test methods and the required test results, aligned with IMO performance recommendations.
Abstract
IEC 62065:2014 (2nd edition) defines operational and performance requirements, test procedures and pass/fail criteria for automatic track control systems used in maritime navigation. It is written to conform with IMO Resolution MSC.74(69) (Annex 2) and takes into account related IMO and IEC guidance including IEC 60945 and bridge alert management requirements; the 2014 edition updated alarm/warning handling, revised Category B requirements, adjusted ship-model parameters and added new interface requirements in an Annex.
General information
- Status: Withdrawn / superseded — replaced by IEC 62065:2025 (edition 3.0).
- Publication date: 6 February 2014.
- Publisher: IEC — International Electrotechnical Commission.
- ICS / categories: 47.020.70 — Navigation and control equipment.
- Edition / version: Edition 2.0 (second edition, 2014).
- Number of pages: 100 pages (as published by IEC).
Scope
IEC 62065:2014 specifies the minimum operational and performance requirements, the methods of testing and the required test results for maritime track control systems so they meet the performance standards adopted by the IMO (MSC.74(69) Annex 2). The standard also takes into account IMO resolution A.694(17) (as related to IEC 60945) and IMO resolution MSC.302(87) on bridge alert management; where this standard differs from IEC 60945, IEC 62065 takes precedence for track control systems.
Key topics and requirements
- Operational and performance requirements for track control functions (accuracy, stability, response behaviour).
- Defined test methods and required test results for validating track control system performance.
- Alarm, warning and bridge alert management requirements aligned with BAM/IMO recommendations.
- Revised requirements for Category B systems and associated performance categories.
- Ship-model parameter specifications (Annex I) and tidal-current modelling for test scenarios.
- Interface requirements and new annexes covering system integration and data flows (including added Annex K in 2014 edition).
- Normative and informative annexes describing test scenarios, plots and sequence diagrams used for verification.
Typical use and users
Used by manufacturers of shipborne navigation and autopilot/track-control equipment, system integrators, test laboratories, classification societies, shipyards, maritime regulators and design offices to design, validate and certify track control systems for compliance with IMO performance expectations.
Related standards
Relevant documents and standards often referenced alongside IEC 62065 include IEC 60945 (maritime navigation equipment — general requirements), IMO Resolutions MSC.74(69) (Annex 2) and MSC.302(87) on bridge alert management, and newer IEC guidance such as IEC 62923 series on alert management; the 2014 edition also cross-references IEC 60945 where applicable.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: IEC 62065:2014 is the second-edition IEC international standard that sets operational and performance requirements, test methods and required results for maritime track control systems used in ship navigation.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers system functional performance, test procedures and pass/fail criteria, alarm and alert handling consistent with bridge alert management, ship-model parameters for testing, and interface/data requirements necessary to validate track control behaviour.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Equipment manufacturers, integrators, test labs, classification societies, shipbuilders and maritime authorities use the standard for product development, conformance testing and type approval activities.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: IEC 62065:2014 was superseded by IEC 62065:2025 (edition 3.0). The 2014 edition was withdrawn/replaced on 16 October 2025 when the 2025 edition was published. For new designs and certifications, consult the 2025 edition and applicable national adoptions.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: IEC 62065 is part of the IEC/TC 80 family of maritime navigation and radiocommunication equipment standards and is commonly used together with general maritime standards such as IEC 60945 and related IEC/IMO documents addressing alert management and bridge systems.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Track control, autopilot, maritime navigation, test methods, performance requirements, bridge alert management, IMO MSC.74(69), IEC 62065.
