Full title and description

Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components - Fibre optic circulators - Generic specification. IEC 62077:2022 defines generic requirements, classification, documentation and quality‑assessment procedures for passive, non‑reciprocal fibre‑optic circulators with three or more ports; it is published in English and French (bilingual).

Abstract

IEC 62077:2022 (Edition 4.0) is the fourth edition of the international generic specification for fibre‑optic circulators. It updates and harmonizes terminology and normative requirements for passive, non‑reciprocal devices whose ports are optical fibres or fibre connectors, and provides requirements for design, performance, documentation and quality assessment. Informative annexes give an example of circulator technology and an example application. This edition cancels and replaces the previous edition and introduces technical revisions including harmonization with relevant vocabulary Technical Specifications and changes to Clause 4 (requirements).

General information

  • Status: Published (International Standard)
  • Publication date: 10 August 2022
  • Publisher: International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)
  • ICS / categories: 33.180.20 (Fibre optic interconnecting devices)
  • Edition / version: Edition 4.0 (2022)
  • Number of pages: 33 (bilingual English/French edition)

Scope

IEC 62077:2022 applies to circulators used in the field of fibre optics that meet all the following characteristics: they are non‑reciprocal optical devices in which each port is an optical fibre or fibre‑optic connector; they are passive devices (as categorized in IEC TS 62538); and they have three or more ports for directional transmission of optical power. The standard addresses classification, documentation, performance and quality assessment and includes informative annexes describing an example circulator technology and an example application.

Key topics and requirements

  • Definitions and harmonized vocabulary for passive fibre‑optic circulators (aligned with relevant IEC technical specifications).
  • Classification and assessment levels (type, style, variants, assessment/quality levels).
  • Documentation and specification system requirements (drawings, symbols, test and measurement reporting, instructions for use).
  • Design, construction and materials guidance, including workmanship and marking/identification requirements.
  • Performance parameters and test requirements (insertion loss, isolation, return loss, polarization effects and other performance characteristics as applicable).
  • Quality assessment and sampling/test procedures for conformity and production control.
  • Environmental, storage and packaging considerations relevant to device reliability and transport.
  • Informative annexes: example magneto‑optic circulator technology and example applications (illustrative, non‑normative).
  • Harmonization changes introduced in the 2022 edition (including alignment with IEC TS 62627‑09 and updates to Clause 4 requirements).

Typical use and users

Primary users include fibre‑optic component manufacturers (design, production and quality teams), test laboratories and conformity assessors, system integrators and equipment vendors specifying or using circulators in WDM systems, optical add/drop and bidirectional links, sensing applications and amplifier/isolation functions, and procurement or standards teams preparing specifications for interoperability and acceptance tests.

Related standards

Standards and technical references commonly used alongside IEC 62077 include IEC TS 62538 (categorization of optical devices), IEC TS 62627‑09 (vocabulary for passive optical devices / harmonized terms), the IEC 61300 series (fibre‑optic test and measurement procedures), IEC 61753 performance standards for optical interconnecting devices, IEC 60068 environmental test series and various connector/interface and optical‑fibre standards referenced by IEC 62077.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: IEC 62077:2022 is the international generic specification for fibre‑optic circulators—passive, non‑reciprocal devices with three or more fibre or connector ports—covering classification, performance requirements, documentation and quality assessment.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers definitions and vocabulary, classification and assessment levels, documentation and drawing requirements, design and construction guidance, performance parameters and test/reporting requirements, quality assessment procedures, marking and packaging, plus informative annexes describing an example technology and application.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Manufacturers of fibre‑optic circulators, test laboratories, system integrators and network equipment vendors, procurement and compliance teams, and standards/specification writers use it to specify, test and accept circulator devices.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: IEC 62077:2022 (Edition 4.0) is the current published edition (published 10 August 2022). It cancels and replaces the previous edition (2015) and contains technical revisions; users should confirm if national or regional adoptions apply in their market.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: IEC 62077 is part of the family of standards for fibre‑optic interconnecting devices and passive components. It is commonly used together with related technical specifications and series such as IEC TS 62538, IEC TS 62627‑09, IEC 61300 test procedures and relevant IEC performance standards (for example IEC 61753 parts).

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: fibre optic circulator, non‑reciprocal, passive optical device, insertion loss, isolation, IEC 62077, quality assessment, test procedures.
