Full title and description

ISO 19085-1:2021 — Woodworking machines — Safety — Part 1: Common requirements. This international standard specifies the common safety requirements and risk-reduction measures that apply to a wide range of woodworking machines used for continuous production, covering operation, adjustment, maintenance, transport, assembly, dismantling, disabling and scrapping when machines are used as intended (reasonably foreseeable misuse is considered).

Abstract

Part 1 of ISO 19085 defines the general (common) safety requirements that are applicable across the ISO 19085 series of standards for woodworking machines. It addresses hazards that are common to most machine types (listed informatively in Annex A), and is intended to be used together with the specific parts of ISO 19085 that deal with particular machine categories. It excludes machines intended for potentially explosive atmospheres and machines manufactured before its publication date.

General information

  • Status: Published (current edition).
  • Publication date: March 2021 (Edition 2, 2021-03).
  • Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
  • ICS / categories: 13.110; 79.120.10.
  • Edition / version: Edition 2 (2021).
  • Number of pages: 47 (ISO published PDF).

Scope

Specifies safety requirements and measures common to woodworking machines capable of continuous production use for processing solid wood and materials with similar physical characteristics. It applies to hand-fed and integrated-feed machines and covers significant hazards during normal use, adjustment and maintenance as well as transport, assembly, dismantling, disabling and scrapping. The document is intended to be read in conjunction with the other parts of ISO 19085 that address hazards specific to particular machine types.

Key topics and requirements

  • Risk assessment and application of ISO 12100 principles for machinery safety.
  • Machine guards and protective devices (fixed guards, interlocking movable guards, adjustable guards, ESPE/PSPE, two‑hand controls).
  • Controls and control functions: start/stop, emergency stop, hold‑to‑run, enabling devices and manual reset requirements.
  • Safe stop strategies, braking, tool run‑down, speed monitoring and standstill detection.
  • Isolation of energy sources and procedures for maintenance (lockout/tagout requirements and access for servicing).
  • Ergonomics, markings, instructions for use, warnings, and information for safe use and maintenance.
  • Noise, emissions and aspects of machine stability and prevention of tool or component break-up.
  • Requirements mapping to relevant safety regulations (machine directives) and informative annexes listing hazards and guidance.

Typical use and users

Used by machine designers and OEMs to embed essential safety features in product design; by safety and compliance engineers and notified/certification bodies for conformity assessment and CE marking documentation; by procurement teams to define safety specifications; and by maintenance managers and technicians to set safe servicing and isolation procedures. It is also used by standards committees and test labs as the basis for specific machine-type requirements in subsequent parts of the ISO 19085 series.

Related standards

ISO 19085-1:2021 is the common-requirements part of the multi-part ISO 19085 series. Other parts address particular machine types (for example, ISO 19085-2 for horizontal beam panel circular sawing machines, ISO 19085-3 for NC/CNC boring and routing machines, and later parts covering presses, sanding machines, etc.). ISO 12100 (general principles for risk assessment and risk reduction) is commonly referenced for hazards that are relevant but not significant in ISO 19085‑1.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 19085-1:2021 is the second-edition international standard that sets out common safety requirements for woodworking machines used in continuous production (Part 1 of the ISO 19085 series).

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers safety requirements and risk-reduction measures common to most woodworking machines (guards, control functions, safe stops, energy isolation, maintenance access, markings and instructions), and is intended to be used together with the specific parts of ISO 19085 for particular machine types.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Machine designers/OEMs, safety and compliance engineers, certification bodies and notified bodies, procurement and maintenance personnel, and standards committees developing machine-specific parts.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: Current — ISO 19085-1:2021 (Edition 2) replaced the 2017 edition; the document is published and in force (ISO lifecycle review typically every five years). Consult national adoption/EN versions for regional publication dates.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes — ISO 19085 is a multi-part series where Part 1 contains common requirements and subsequent parts (e.g., Parts 2, 3, 11, 15, etc.) cover requirements for specific machine types and functions.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Woodworking machines, safety, common requirements, guards, emergency stop, risk assessment, ISO 19085, ISO 12100, machine directives.
