Full title and description

Paints and varnishes — Determination of stone-chip resistance of coatings — Part 2: Single-impact test with a guided impact body. ISO 20567-2:2023 specifies a laboratory single-impact method using a guided impact body (wedge-shaped projectile) to simulate stone impacts and to evaluate the resistance of automotive finishes and other coatings to stone-chip damage.

Abstract

This International Standard defines the principle, apparatus, test panels, test procedure, calibration, evaluation and reporting for a single-impact stone-chip test using a guided impact body. The method is intended to produce reproducible, comparable results for assessing how coatings (particularly automotive finishes and similar systems) resist discrete projectile impacts that simulate stones or gravel.

Scope

ISO 20567-2:2023 specifies a laboratory method to evaluate the resistance of automobile finishes and other coatings to impact by a wedge-shaped (guided) body projected at the coated surface to simulate single stone impacts. The standard covers apparatus and materials, test panels and sample preparation, the test procedure (including impact generation and panel orientation), calibration of the test apparatus, methods for evaluating damaged area and layer-by-layer damage where applicable, precision considerations and required content of the test report. It is intended for comparative and quality-control testing of coating systems under controlled laboratory conditions.

Key topics and requirements

  • Principle of the single-impact test using a guided, wedge-shaped impact body to simulate a stone strike.
  • Specification of apparatus components: impact launcher, guided impact body, panel holder and measuring/monitoring devices and calibration procedures.
  • Requirements for test panels, substrate types and surface preparation/conditioning before testing.
  • Detailed test procedure: projectile positioning, impact energy/velocity control, impact angle and environmental/temperature conditioning where applicable.
  • Calibration and verification routines for the test equipment to ensure repeatability (annexed calibration guidance).
  • Evaluation criteria and measurement methods: quantification of paint removal area, layer-by-layer damage assessment and criteria for reporting results.
  • Precision and repeatability guidance, and recommended number of replicates for comparative testing.
  • Minimum content and format for the test report (test conditions, apparatus settings, specimen identification, results and observations).

Typical use and users

This standard is typically used by automotive OEMs, OEM paint and coating suppliers, independent test laboratories, materials and coatings R&D teams, quality assurance departments and laboratories that perform durability and performance testing of coating systems. Uses include product development, quality control, supplier qualification and comparative performance assessment of coatings intended for exterior vehicle surfaces and other applications exposed to stone impact.

Related standards

ISO 20567 series (notably ISO 20567-1 for multi-impact testing and ISO 20567-3 for single-impact testing with a free‑flying impact body); standards for test panels and coating characterization such as ISO 1514 (standard panels), ISO 2808 (film thickness), ISO 3270 (conditioning and test environment). Common industry and regional equivalents/related methods include SAE J400, ASTM D3170 and various national/adopted versions (for example BS EN ISO 20567-2:2023 and national adoptions based on ISO 20567-2:2023). Other stone-chip and gravelometer test references (DIN, VDA or manufacturer-specific procedures) are often used alongside ISO methods for specific contractual or OEM requirements.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 20567-2:2023 is an international standard that defines a laboratory single-impact test using a guided, wedge-shaped impact body to assess the resistance of coatings—primarily automotive finishes—to stone-like impacts.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers the test principle, required apparatus and materials, specimen preparation and conditioning, detailed test procedure, calibration of equipment, methods for evaluating damage (area and layer-by-layer), considerations on precision and the required content of the test report.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Automotive manufacturers, coating and paint suppliers, independent test laboratories, R&D teams and quality assurance groups use the standard for development, acceptance testing, supplier qualification and comparative performance assessments of exterior coatings.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: ISO 20567-2:2023 is the current published edition (Edition 3, published 27 June 2023). It supersedes the previous edition ISO 20567-2:2017.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes — it is part of the ISO 20567 series on stone-chip resistance. Relevant parts include ISO 20567-1 (multi-impact test) and ISO 20567-3 (single-impact test with a free‑flying impact body), plus related standards for panels and test conditions.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Stone-chip resistance, single-impact, guided impact body, wedge-shaped projectile, coatings testing, gravelometer, automotive finishes, calibration, damage evaluation, ISO 20567-2:2023.
