Full title and description
ISO 20672:2022 — Ships and marine technology — Rate of turn indicators. This International Standard specifies requirements for the construction, performance, testing and required test results for rate of turn indicators as required by maritime safety regulations (SOLAS Reg. 19, ch. V).
Abstract
This document specifies the construction, performance requirements, methods of testing and required test results for the rate of turn indicators required by Clause 2.9.1, Regulation 19, chapter V, SOLAS 1974 (as amended). It is based on the recommendations of IMO Resolution A.526(13), is associated with IMO Resolution A.694(17) and with IEC 60945, and where a requirement in this document differs from IEC 60945 the requirement in this document takes precedence.

Scope
ISO 20672:2022 applies to rate of turn indicators required on ships by SOLAS (Regulation 19, chapter V). The standard covers the required device construction, performance criteria, and the tests (and required test results) used to verify conformity with those criteria. It explicitly references and aligns with relevant IMO resolutions and maritime equipment standards.
Key topics and requirements
- Construction requirements for marine rate of turn indicators (mechanical/electrical design considerations relevant to shipboard use).
- Performance requirements including accuracy, dynamic response and measurement range appropriate for SOLAS applications.
- Methods of type and performance testing and the required test results to demonstrate compliance.
- Requirements and text extracted from IMO Resolution A.526(13), associated references to IMO A.694(17) and IEC 60945; where differences exist the ISO requirement takes precedence.
- Application to indicators required by Clause 2.9.1, Regulation 19, chapter V, SOLAS 1974 (as amended).
Typical use and users
This standard is used by shipbuilders, marine equipment manufacturers, designers of navigation instruments, classification societies, maritime regulators, surveyors and ship operators to ensure rate of turn indicators meet internationally accepted performance and testing criteria for SOLAS compliance.
Related standards
Relevant documents and references include SOLAS Regulation 19 (chapter V), IMO Resolution A.526(13), IMO Resolution A.694(17) and IEC 60945 (equipment and EMC requirements). ISO/TC 8/SC 6 is the technical committee responsible for this area.
