Full title and description
Space systems — Fiber optic components — Design and verification requirements. This International Standard specifies design and verification requirements intended to assure the reliability and environmental adaptability of fibre‑optic components used in space fibre‑optic sub‑systems (ground, unmanned and manned applications).
Abstract
This document establishes requirements and recommended practices for selection, design, packaging, marking and verification of fibre optic components for space use, covering optical, electrical, structural, thermal, packaging and reliability disciplines and including verification methods to demonstrate environmental adaptability and lifetime performance in space conditions.

Scope
Specifies requirements for the design and verification of fibre optic components destined for use in space fibre‑optic sub‑systems. The standard addresses design inputs and outputs, design flows, functional parameter requirements (optical and electrical), structural and packaging design, thermal and radiation considerations, reliability and verification processes to demonstrate performance in space environments. It is aimed at assuring predictable behaviour and adaptability of selected components for ground, unmanned and manned space applications.
Key topics and requirements
- Design criteria and inputs: use of mature technologies, consideration of TRL and customer/mission requirements.
- Functional parameter design: optical coupling, alignment, insertion loss, back‑reflection and relevant electrical parameters for active devices.
- Structural and packaging design: external/internal structures, fibre coupling, pigtails, fusing/tapering, protection, marking and handling.
- Thermal, ESD and radiation considerations: design practices to tolerate space thermal cycles, ESD protection and radiation effects where applicable.
- Reliability and verification: FMEA during design, environmental adaptability testing, function/parameter verification, MRL/Manufacturing Readiness Level assessment and documentation of verification results.
Typical use and users
Engineers and designers of space optical subsystems, component manufacturers and suppliers of fibre optic parts for space, systems integrators, procurement/specification authors, and test/qualification teams working on spacecraft, payloads, launch‑vehicle interfaces and related ground support equipment. The standard is used to define design expectations, test and qualification plans, and supplier selection and acceptance criteria for space projects.
Related standards
Related documents include other ISO and IEC standards covering space systems and environmental testing, fibre‑optic connector and cable specifications, and test methods (for example standards produced by ISO/TC 20/SC 14 and established IEC fibre‑optic test series). Users commonly apply this standard alongside specific connector, cable and environmental test standards when developing procurement and qualification plans.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 20780:2018 is an International Standard that defines design and verification requirements for fibre optic components used in space fibre‑optic sub‑systems (first edition, published June 2018).
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers design inputs and outputs, optical/electrical/structural/thermal/packaging design considerations, reliability practices (including FMEA), and verification/qualification methods to ensure components perform and survive in space environments.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Space system designers and engineers, component manufacturers and suppliers, systems integrators, procurement teams and test/qualification engineers who need to define, assess or verify fibre optic components for space applications.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: As published, ISO 20780:2018 is the first edition (published June 2018) and is listed as a published ISO standard. ISO standards are subject to periodic review (typically every five years); users should check the issuing body or their national standards organization for any amendments, confirmations or withdrawals since publication.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: It is a standalone ISO standard developed under ISO/TC 20/SC 14 (space systems and operations). It is commonly used together with other ISO/IEC standards relevant to space equipment, fibre‑optic components, and environmental testing rather than as a numbered multi‑part series.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Fibre optic components; space systems; design requirements; verification; reliability; packaging; optical coupling; environmental adaptability; FMEA; MRL.
