Full title and description

St ISO 22241-4-2023 — Diesel engines — NOx reduction agent AUS 32 — Part 4: Refilling interface. This International Standard specifies the functional and geometric requirements for refilling interfaces (open refilling systems) used to fill AUS 32 (commonly traded as AdBlue/AUS‑32) on commercial vehicles and the corresponding stationary off‑board refilling nozzles to ensure compatibility between on‑board and off‑board refilling systems.

Abstract

This document defines the minimum functional and geometric requirements of an open refilling system for the NOx reduction agent AUS 32 so that on‑board and off‑board refilling equipment are compatible. Compatibility conditions for a sealed refilling system are given in Annex A. It is intended for vehicles equipped with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems and for the nozzles of stationary off‑board refilling equipment.

General information

  • Status: Published.
  • Publication date: 16 October 2023.
  • Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
  • ICS / categories: 43.060.40.
  • Edition / version: Edition 3 (ed. 3.0, 2023).
  • Number of pages: 18.

Scope

Applies to diesel‑engine powered commercial vehicles and buses (as defined in ISO 3833) with a gross vehicle mass greater than 3.5 t that are designed to use stationary off‑board refilling systems. Specifies requirements for the open refilling interface on board vehicles and for the nozzle of stationary refilling equipment; provides compatibility conditions for sealed refilling systems in an informative annex. The document is given in conformance with ISO 22241‑1 (quality requirements for AUS 32).

Key topics and requirements

  • Minimum functional and geometric requirements for open refilling interfaces (dimensions, location and basic fit/clearance rules).
  • Design requirements for stationary off‑board refilling nozzles to ensure physical compatibility with vehicle inlets.
  • Compatibility considerations for sealed refilling systems (requirements and recommendations provided in Annex A).
  • Requirements intended to avoid contamination, spillage and incorrect mating (materials, sealing and basic vetting for contamination risk).
  • Conformance with ISO 22241‑1 quality requirements for AUS 32 and with the broader ISO 22241 series test/handling guidance.

Typical use and users

Used by heavy vehicle manufacturers (OEMs), component and refuelling‑equipment suppliers, fleet operators, service and maintenance organisations, fuel/fluids distributors, and regulatory bodies to ensure interoperability between vehicle refilling inlets and public or depot refuelling equipment. Also referenced by designers of stationary refilling installations and by workshop technicians responsible for SCR system servicing.

Related standards

ISO 22241 is a multipart series covering AUS 32 (AdBlue) requirements: ISO 22241‑1 (quality requirements for AUS 32), ISO 22241‑2 (test methods), ISO 22241‑3 (handling, transportation and storage), and ISO 22241‑5 (refilling interface for passenger cars/light vehicles). These parts together cover product specification, testing, logistics and refilling‑interface requirements for different vehicle classes.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 22241‑4:2023 is the part of the ISO 22241 series that specifies the refilling interface (mainly open refilling systems) for the NOx reduction agent AUS 32 used with SCR exhaust treatment systems on diesel vehicles.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers the minimum functional and geometric requirements for vehicle refilling inlets and the corresponding stationary off‑board refilling nozzles to ensure compatibility and safe refilling. It also includes compatibility guidance for sealed refilling systems (Annex A).

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Vehicle OEMs, refuelling‑equipment manufacturers, fleet operators, service workshops, fuel distributors and regulators use this standard to ensure interoperability and safe handling of AUS 32 refilling operations.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: Current — published 16 October 2023 (Edition 3). It replaces the previous edition (ISO 22241‑4:2019).

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes — it is one part of the ISO 22241 multipart standard covering AUS 32 (quality requirements, test methods, handling/transport/storage and refilling interfaces for different vehicle categories).

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: AUS 32, AdBlue, refilling interface, refuelling nozzle, selective catalytic reduction, NOx reduction agent, diesel engines, commercial vehicles, compatibility, open refilling system.
