Full title and description
ASME B30.5-2021 — Mobile and Locomotive Cranes. This ASME safety standard provides recommended practices and minimum requirements for the construction, installation, inspection, testing, maintenance and safe operation of mobile and locomotive cranes (crawler, wheel-mounted and locomotive-type cranes) powered by internal combustion engines or electric motors. It excludes side-boom tractors, digger derricks, cranes used specifically for energized-line service, knuckle-boom and trolley-boom cranes, and cranes with a maximum rated capacity of one ton or less.
Abstract
ASME B30.5-2021 sets out safety-related requirements and guidance for owners, operators, manufacturers, inspectors and maintenance personnel of mobile and locomotive cranes. Topics include design/construction considerations, marking and capacity information, rated-capacity charts, inspection and testing procedures, operational practices, maintenance, required safety devices and operator qualifications and responsibilities. The document is intended to be used alongside other B30-series volumes where equipment overlaps.
General information
- Status: Superseded — replaced by ASME B30.5:2025; the 2025 edition is the current edition as of February 20, 2026.
- Publication date: December 17, 2021.
- Publisher: American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
- ICS / categories: 53.020.20 — Cranes (Lifting equipment / cranes).
- Edition / version: 2021 edition (ASME B30.5-2021).
- Number of pages: 74 (typical published PDF page count for the 2021 edition).
Scope
Applies to mobile and locomotive cranes (crawler, wheel-mounted and locomotive types) that retain the fundamental characteristics of a crane and are powered by internal combustion engines or electric motors. The standard covers life‑cycle activities from manufacture and installation through operation, inspection, maintenance and testing, but explicitly excludes certain specialized equipment and very low-capacity cranes. It is intended to be applied together with other relevant B30-series volumes where applicable.
Key topics and requirements
- Definitions and classification of mobile and locomotive crane types.
- Design and construction requirements and safety-related design provisions.
- Rated-capacity charts, load-rating information and stability considerations.
- Marking, identification and information to be provided with the crane.
- Operational practices, operator duties and required operator qualifications.
- Inspection, periodic testing, pre-use checks and maintenance procedures.
- Requirements for rigging, hooks, ropes, slings and lifting attachments.
- Safety devices and systems (limit switches, load indicators, anti‑two‑block, tipping protection, brakes, locking devices).
- Recordkeeping, reporting of defects and procedures for removal from service.
- Integration and cross‑reference to other B30-series safety requirements for related equipment.
Typical use and users
Used by crane manufacturers for design and marking, by owners and employers to develop safe operating practices and maintenance programs, by equipment inspectors and regulators to evaluate compliance, and by training organizations for operator and maintenance personnel education. Typical sectors include construction, heavy industrial works, utilities, marine support and any operation that deploys mobile or locomotive cranes.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ASME B30.5-2021 is the ASME safety standard titled "Mobile and Locomotive Cranes" that specifies minimum recommended practices for the safe design, construction, inspection, testing, maintenance and operation of mobile and locomotive cranes.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers the full life cycle of mobile and locomotive cranes (excluding certain specialized types), including design and construction features, required markings and capacity information, inspection and testing procedures, operational practices, necessary safety devices and maintenance requirements.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Manufacturers, crane owners and operators, maintenance personnel, safety and compliance officers, inspectors, training providers and regulators use the standard to set or verify safe practices for mobile and locomotive crane use.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ASME B30.5-2021 has been superseded by a later edition, ASME B30.5:2025. The 2025 edition is the current, up‑to‑date volume as of February 20, 2026; users should consult the 2025 edition for the most recent revisions.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — it is one volume within the ASME B30 series of crane and lifting-equipment safety standards (each B30 volume addresses a different crane or lifting category). Use the relevant B30 volumes together when equipment or operations overlap.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Mobile crane, locomotive crane, rated-capacity chart, inspection, testing, operator qualification, rigging, safety devices, ASME B30.5, crane safety.
