Full title and description
AS 3850.1:2024 — Prefabricated concrete elements, Part 1: General requirements. This Standard provides the general requirements for materials, components and equipment used in the manufacture of prefabricated (precast) concrete elements; it is intended to be read alongside the other parts of AS 3850 and the relevant structural design Standards.
Abstract
AS 3850.1:2024 sets out mandatory and normative requirements covering the selection, testing and use of materials and components, requirements for lifting, bracing and fixing systems, factory production controls and verification procedures needed to manufacture safe, durable prefabricated concrete elements. The document does not cover in-service design of prefabricated elements (see applicable design Standards).
General information
- Status: Current (second edition, 2024).
- Publication date: 28 June 2024.
- Publisher: Standards Australia.
- ICS / categories: Concrete and concrete products — ICS 91.100.30 (classification related to concrete and concrete products).
- Edition / version: Second edition (2024). Supersedes AS 3850.1:2015 and earlier drafts.
- Number of pages: Published editions are listed as approximately 84–92 pages depending on the publisher/format (vendor listings vary).
Scope
This Standard specifies general requirements for the materials, components and equipment used in the manufacture of prefabricated concrete elements. It includes requirements for concrete and reinforcement, lifting and bracing arrangements, fixing inserts and ferrules, lifting clutches, manufacture controls and testing procedures for components used in production. AS 3850.1:2024 does not address the in-service structural design of elements; designers should apply AS 3600 (Concrete structures), AS 5100 (Bridges) or other applicable design Standards together with the product-specific parts of AS 3850.
Key topics and requirements
- Requirements for concrete, reinforcement and concrete production control (mixes, curing, QA/QC).
- Working load limit (WLL) calculation and verification for lifting systems and inserts.
- Specifications and testing for lifting inserts, clutches, braces and cast-in fixing ferrules.
- Requirements for curing compounds, release agents and other production chemicals.
- Factory production control, inspection and testing procedures for components and equipment.
- Verification, sampling and testing methods for lifting systems that rely on component reinforcement.
- Marking, documentation and traceability requirements for manufactured elements.
Typical use and users
Primary users include precast concrete manufacturers, factory QA/QC managers, structural engineers and designers who specify or design precast components, lifting and rigging engineers, building certifiers and procurement/specification authors in the construction industry. It is used to set factory production requirements, specify acceptable components and to inform procurement and inspection checklists.
Related standards
Commonly used with AS 3850.2 (building construction — product/application-specific requirements) and AS 3850.3 (other parts of the AS 3850 series), and read together with design Standards such as AS 3600 (Concrete structures) and AS 5100 (Bridge design) where applicable. This edition revises and supersedes AS 3850.1:2015 (and related amendments).

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: AS 3850.1:2024 is Part 1 of the AS 3850 series and provides the general manufacturing requirements for prefabricated (precast) concrete elements.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers materials, components and equipment used in production (concrete, reinforcement, lifting and fixing systems, curing and release agents), test and verification requirements for lifting/bracing components, and factory production control measures. It does not cover the in-service structural design of elements.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Precast manufacturers, structural and lifting engineers, QA/QC personnel, specifiers and building certifiers use this Standard to set manufacturing, handling and verification requirements for precast elements.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: It is current (second edition, 2024). It supersedes AS 3850.1:2015 (and the 2019 amendment) and replaces earlier editions and drafts.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — AS 3850 is a multi-part series addressing prefabricated concrete elements; Part 1 covers general requirements while the companion parts cover product/application or design-specific requirements.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Prefabricated/Precast concrete, lifting inserts, working load limit (WLL), bracing, factory production control, concrete reinforcement, curing agents, release agents.
