Full title and description
Uninterruptible power systems (UPS) - Part 5-3: DC output UPS - Performance and test requirements. This international standard specifies performance and test requirements for complete electronic DC uninterruptible power systems (DC UPS) that are supplied from AC sources up to 1 000 V, deliver DC outputs up to 1 500 V, incorporate energy storage and are intended to ensure continuity of DC power to connected loads.
Abstract
IEC 62040-5-3:2016 defines type and performance tests, measurement methods and acceptance criteria for complete DC-output UPS products (not individual UPS functional units). It covers functional performance, energy storage interactions, output characteristics, environmental and electrical testing relevant to ensuring reliable DC supply under normal and disturbed conditions.

Scope
This document applies to movable, stationary and permanently installed electronic DC UPS units that: are fed from AC supplies not exceeding 1 000 V; provide DC outputs not exceeding 1 500 V; include an energy storage device (battery or equivalent); and whose primary function is to ensure continuity of DC power to loads. It specifies requirements and tests for a complete DC UPS (type testing, performance verification and related measurement methods) and does not replace individual functional-unit standards except where explicitly referenced.
Key topics and requirements
- Performance criteria for DC output stability, voltage regulation and ripple under defined load conditions.
- Type and routine test procedures for functional performance, environmental endurance and electrical safety interfaces.
- Requirements and tests relating to energy storage devices (capacity, discharge behaviour, interaction with UPS control and recovery).
- Tests for continuity of supply, startup/shutdown behaviour, transfer/bypass arrangements and fault response.
- Measurement methods and acceptance limits for output characteristics up to 1 500 V DC and coordination with AC input limits.
- Guidance on test configurations, instrumentation and reporting of results for product conformity assessment.
Typical use and users
Applied by manufacturers for design verification and type approval, testing laboratories for conformity and type testing, procurement and specifying engineers in telecommunications, data centers, industrial control, transportation and utility DC distribution systems, and certification bodies assessing product compliance with IEC 62040 series requirements.
Related standards
IEC 62040-5-3 is part of the IEC 62040 series addressing UPS systems. Relevant related parts include IEC 62040-2 (EMC requirements) and IEC 62040-3 / IEC 62040-3:2021 (methods of specifying performance and test requirements), as well as the general and safety parts of the 62040 family (parts 1‑1, 1‑2) for operator and restricted-access locations. National/adopted editions exist as EN/BS/DIN variants (for example EN/BS EN 62040-5-3:2017).

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: IEC 62040-5-3:2016 is an international product standard that specifies performance and test requirements for complete DC-output uninterruptible power systems (DC UPS).
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers functional performance, test procedures, measurement methods and acceptance criteria for DC UPS units (AC supply ≤ 1 000 V, DC output ≤ 1 500 V) including interactions with energy storage devices; it is intended for complete units rather than individual functional modules.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Manufacturers, test laboratories, certification bodies, specifying engineers in telecoms, data centres, industrial DC systems and procurement teams use this standard for product development, type testing and compliance assessment.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: The IEC edition was published on 26 October 2016 and is the recognized edition (stability indicated through 2026 on the IEC record); national adoptions such as EN/BS variations were published subsequently (2017). Users should check national catalogues or the IEC webstore for any amendments or newer revisions beyond 2016.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — it is one part of the IEC 62040 series (UPS standards). Other parts cover EMC (Part 2), performance specification methods (Part 3), and general/safety requirements (Parts 1‑1, 1‑2), among others.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: DC UPS, uninterruptible power supply, performance testing, type test, energy storage, LVDC, IEC 62040.
