Full title and description
St IEC 62087-5-2015 — Audio, video, and related equipment — Determination of power consumption — Part 5: Set-top-boxes (STB). This part specifies recognised methods of measurement for the power consumption of set‑top boxes and defines the relevant modes of operation and test conditions for consistent measurement and reporting.
Abstract
IEC 62087-5:2015 provides standardized measurement procedures for determining the power consumption of set‑top boxes (STBs). It establishes defined operating modes, test conditions and measurement arrangements so that results are comparable between products, laboratories and regulatory frameworks. This first edition replaces Clause 8 of IEC 62087:2011 and, together with the other parts of IEC 62087, constitutes a technical revision of the older consolidated standard.
General information
- Status: Published (first edition; listed with IEC stability date through 2030)
- Publication date: June 5, 2015
- Publisher: International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)
- ICS / categories: 33.160.10
- Edition / version: Edition 1.0 (first edition)
- Number of pages: 18
Scope
Specifies methods of measurement for the power consumption of set‑top boxes (STBs), defining the modes of operation relevant for measurement (for example active, standby, networked standby and off), the measurement environment and conditions, and the necessary procedures to obtain repeatable and representative power‑consumption results. The methods apply to equipment that can be connected to the mains and are intended to represent normal use; they may differ from conditions specified in safety standards or in dedicated regulatory test procedures.
Key topics and requirements
- Definition of STB operating modes relevant to power measurement (active, idle, standby, networked standby, off).
- Specified test setup and measurement arrangements (mains conditions, ambient environment, equipment configuration).
- Reference signals/media and test stimuli needed to exercise typical functions (links to the IEC 62087 series test signal guidance).
- Procedures for measuring average and instantaneous power, energy over defined intervals and reporting conventions.
- Requirements for measurement uncertainty, instrumentation accuracy and calibration practice.
- Treatment of auxiliary functions (network interfaces, USB powering, recording/wake features) and their contribution to measured power.
- Reporting formats and required data to support comparison between devices and laboratories.
- Normative references and relationship to other parts of the IEC 62087 series and related standby/low‑power measurement standards.
Typical use and users
Used by product manufacturers and design engineers to characterize and improve STB energy performance; by independent test laboratories and certification bodies for compliance testing; by procurement teams and energy/eco‑labelling organisations when assessing product efficiency; and by regulators developing or applying energy‑efficiency or standby‑power rules to consumer gateway and STB equipment.
Related standards
IEC 62087 (series: Parts 1–6) — other parts define general principles, signals/media, television sets, video recording equipment, monitors, etc.; IEC 62087-1 (general); IEC 62087-2 (signals and media); IEC 62087-3, -4, -6 (related equipment types). Related measurement standards include IEC 62301 (measurement of standby power) and applicable regional/adopted versions such as EN 62087-5:2016 (European adoption). The 2015 Part 5 edition replaces the Clause 8 content of IEC 62087:2011.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: IEC 62087-5:2015 is the part of the IEC 62087 series that defines methods to measure the power consumption of set‑top boxes (STBs).
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers defined operating modes, test conditions, measurement arrangements and reporting requirements for determining the power and energy consumption of mains‑connected STBs under representative use conditions.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Product manufacturers, design teams, independent test laboratories, certification bodies, energy labelling and regulatory authorities, and procurement or sustainability teams who assess STB energy performance.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: IEC 62087-5:2015 is the first edition published June 5, 2015. It replaced Clause 8 of IEC 62087:2011. IEC lists this part as stable through 2030; no later edition of Part 5 was published prior to February 25, 2026.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — it is Part 5 of the IEC 62087 series (Determination of power consumption) and is intended to be used together with the other parts (Parts 1–4 and -6) for comprehensive measurement guidance across audio/video and related equipment.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Set-top box, STB, power consumption, energy measurement, standby, networked standby, IEC 62087, measurement procedure.
