Full title and description

IEC 62282-2-100:2020 — Fuel cell technologies — Part 2-100: Fuel cell modules — Safety. This international standard specifies safety-related requirements for the design, construction, operation (normal and abnormal conditions) and testing of fuel cell modules, addressing hazards to persons and damage outside the module while allowing that internal damage not causing external hazards is outside its scope.

Abstract

This first edition (2020) replaces IEC 62282-2:2012 and updates definitions (including “fuel cell module for normal operation”), leakage values and test methods, adds a delayed-ignition test, protective measures to limit gas leakage, updated requirements for insulation and dielectric strength tests (referencing IEC 62744-1 for certain voltages), a new pressure-drop leakage test method and an annex on significant hazards and hazardous situations. The published copy available from IEC incorporates the corrigendum issued in November 2023.

General information

  • Status: Published / Current (international standard, includes corrigendum issued 2023).
  • Publication date: 7 May 2020 (IEC publication date).
  • Publisher: International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), TC 105 Fuel cell technologies.
  • ICS / categories: 27.070 (Fuel cells) — Safety category.
  • Edition / version: Edition 1.0 (2020); corrigendum/COR1 published Nov 15, 2023 (corrigendum incorporated in IEC copy).
  • Number of pages: 90 pages (IEC published PDF copy).

Scope

Applies to fuel cell modules of various electrolyte chemistries (e.g., alkaline, PEM including direct methanol, phosphoric acid, molten carbonate, solid oxide and aqueous salt solutions) and covers modules that may be enclosed or operated at elevated pressures or near ambient. The standard focuses on conditions that can create hazards to people or cause damage outside the module; protection of internal parts is only considered where internal damage could create external hazards. It does not cover fuel cell road-vehicle applications and does not address fuel storage and delivery systems external to the module. The standard covers requirements up to the DC output of the module and may be superseded by application-specific standards for equipment that contains fuel cell modules.

Key topics and requirements

  • General safety strategy and definitions specific to fuel cell modules (updated vs. IEC 62282-2:2012).
  • Leakage limits and test procedures for normal and abnormal operation, including a new pressure-drop leakage test method.
  • Delayed-ignition test and additional protective measures to limit gas leakage.
  • Electrical requirements: updated insulation and dielectric-strength testing (reference to IEC 62744-1 for voltages up to specified levels) and revised electrical components clause.
  • Protective earthing or bonding requirements as part of module design or installation measures.
  • Annex addressing significant hazards, hazardous situations and events linked to the general safety strategy.

Typical use and users

Primary users include fuel cell module manufacturers and designers, test laboratories, certification and conformity-assessment bodies, integrators of fuel cell modules into end products, safety engineers, national standards bodies adopting the IEC text, and regulators specifying product safety requirements. The standard is used to guide module design, type testing and safety documentation for non-vehicle stationary and component applications.

Related standards

Key related documents and references include the earlier IEC 62282-2:2012 (superseded), other parts of the IEC 62282 series such as IEC 62282-3-100 (application-specific safety strategy updates), IEC 62744-1 (dielectric strength testing reference), and national/adopted EN/UNE/ST versions (EN IEC 62282-2-100:2020 and associated corrigenda/amendments). The IEC webstore entry notes the corrigendum (COR1) published in 2023.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: IEC 62282-2-100:2020 is an IEC international standard that sets safety-related requirements for fuel cell modules (construction, operation, testing) intended to protect people and external property from hazards associated with module operation.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers fuel cell module safety for a range of electrolyte chemistries, leakage limits and testing, electrical insulation and dielectric-strength requirements, delayed-ignition testing, protective measures to limit gas leakage, and an annex on significant hazards. It does not cover fuel storage/delivery systems or road vehicle applications and only addresses internal damage insofar as it creates external hazards.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Manufacturers, product designers, test laboratories, certification bodies, integrators of modules into equipment, safety assessors and standards committees use it to design, evaluate and certify fuel cell modules for stationary and component applications.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: IEC 62282-2-100:2020 is the current (first) edition replacing IEC 62282-2:2012. A corrigendum (COR1) was issued in November 2023 and has been incorporated into the IEC copy; the IEC entry shows a stability date through 2026. Users should check national adoption or amendment documents for later corrections or amendments (some national bodies have published AC/correction documents in 2023–2024).

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes — it is part of the IEC 62282 series (Fuel cell technologies). Other parts address systems, applications and testing (for example IEC 62282-3-100 and additional parts); this part (2-100) specifically addresses fuel cell modules.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Fuel cell module, safety, leakage testing, delayed ignition, dielectric strength, insulation, protective earthing, pressure-drop method, IEC 62282, TC 105.
