Full title and description

IEC 63136:2019 — Electric dishwashers for commercial use — Test methods for measuring the performance. This international standard specifies standardised test methods and procedures to measure the principal performance characteristics of manually loaded under‑counter one‑tank and one‑tank hood‑type electrically heated commercial dishwashing machines (washing plates, dishes, glassware, cutlery and similar articles). It is a test‑methods document and does not set safety or minimum performance requirements; it is intended to produce repeatable, comparable performance data.

Abstract

IEC 63136:2019 defines the test apparatus, test conditions, specimen preparation and measurement procedures used to evaluate cleaning effectiveness and other performance characteristics (energy and water consumption, cycle time, drying, reporting requirements) of commercial electric dishwashers of the under‑counter, one‑tank and hood‑type categories. The standard is intended for use by manufacturers, test laboratories and regulatory or procurement bodies that need objective, comparable performance data. The published text includes the corrigendum issued in 2021.

General information

  • Status: Published (International Standard).
  • Publication date: 19 September 2019 (base publication); corrigendum issued March 2021 is incorporated in many distributions.
  • Publisher: International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
  • ICS / categories: 97.040.40 — Dishwashers.
  • Edition / version: Edition 1.0 (2019). Corrigendum 1 (2021) issued to correct the base text; many national adoptions incorporate the corrigendum.
  • Number of pages: Base IEC publication: 69 pages (PDF); some national/adopted versions (EN/NF/BS variants) show differing page counts due to bilingual or national front matter (for example 41–42 pages in some adopted versions).

Scope

Applies to manually loaded under‑counter one‑tank and one‑tank hood‑type electrically heated dishwashing machines used in commercial kitchens (restaurants, canteens, hospitals, bakeries, butchers, etc.). Excludes commercial dishwashers with transport systems (flight‑type and rack conveyor dishwashers), utensil washers, under‑counter water‑change dishwashers and appliances designed exclusively for industrial purposes. The standard’s object is to state and define principal performance characteristics and to describe standard methods of measuring them; characteristics are measured primarily by washing plates. The standard does not address safety requirements (safety is covered by separate standards such as IEC 60335‑2‑58).

Key topics and requirements

  • Definition of machine types in scope (under‑counter, one‑tank, hood‑type) and exclusions.
  • List of measurements and principal performance characteristics to be tested (cleaning/resoiling performance, water consumption, energy consumption, cycle time, drying performance).
  • Detailed test conditions and environmental/control requirements (water temperature, detergent and rinse aid usage, reference soils and control samples, test loads and loading patterns).
  • Specimen preparation, repeatability and reproducibility procedures, scoring and reporting formats for test results.
  • Specification of test equipment, measurement tolerances and data to be reported (to allow comparison between laboratories and products).
  • References to normative annexes (test materials for laboratories) and informative flowcharts describing test sequences.

Typical use and users

Primary users are commercial dishwasher manufacturers (for product development and performance declarations), accredited test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies (for performance verification), procurement teams in food service / hospitality and institutional buyers (to compare machine performance and operating costs), and R&D or QA teams concerned with wash efficacy, water/energy efficiency and cycle optimization. Regulatory or national standards bodies and test method committees may also use the document as a reference.

Related standards

Key related documents include: - IEC 63136:2019/COR1:2021 (Corrigendum 1) — corrections to the base test methods. - Earlier regional/test method standards such as EN/BS/CEI EN 50593 (2017), which has been superseded by EN IEC 63136/variants in some markets. - Safety standards for commercial dishwashing machines, notably IEC 60335‑2‑58 (part of the IEC 60335 household and similar electrical appliances safety series) for particular safety requirements. - National adoptions and amendments (EN IEC, NF EN IEC, BS EN IEC versions) that may include national forewords, applicability notes or bilingual formatting.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: IEC 63136:2019 is an international test‑methods standard that defines how to measure the performance of manually loaded under‑counter one‑tank and hood‑type commercial electric dishwashers (cleaning efficacy, water/energy use, cycle time, drying, etc.). It is not a safety standard.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers the test apparatus, test conditions, sample preparation, reference soils, measurement procedures, tolerances and reporting formats needed to produce repeatable, comparable performance data for the machines in scope; it excludes conveyor/flight‑type machines, utensil washers and appliances intended solely for industrial use.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Manufacturers, accredited test laboratories, conformity assessment and certification bodies, procurement and specification teams in hospitality/food service, and R&D and QA teams. National standards organizations and market surveillance authorities also reference the document.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: The base edition was published in September 2019 (Edition 1.0). A corrigendum (IEC 63136:2019/COR1:2021) was issued in March 2021; many national/adopted versions incorporate that corrigendum. As published by the IEC the document lists a stability date through 2026 (check national adoption texts for local implementation dates or amendments).

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: It is a standalone test‑methods standard for commercial electric dishwashers and sits alongside other IEC/EN standards that address safety (for example IEC 60335‑2‑58) and prior regional test methods (EN/BS/CEI EN 50593). It was prepared by TC 59/SC 59A (Electric dishwashers) and may be published as EN IEC 63136 in European adoption.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: electric dishwasher; commercial dishwasher; test methods; performance measurement; cleaning efficacy; energy consumption; water consumption; cycle time; drying; under‑counter; one‑tank; hood‑type; IEC 63136.
