Full title and description

IEC TR 62271-305:2009 — High-voltage switchgear and controlgear — Part 305: Capacitive current switching capability of air-insulated disconnectors for rated voltages above 52 kV. This Technical Report describes the capacitive current switching duty for air-insulated disconnectors and gives guidance on laboratory testing to demonstrate switching capability; air-insulated disconnectors equipped with auxiliary interrupting devices are included.

Abstract

This Technical Report provides guidance on defining and testing the capacitive current switching capability of air‑insulated disconnectors with rated voltages above 52 kV. It summarizes typical switching duties, recommended test arrangements and measurement practices used in laboratory evaluations to verify whether a disconnector (including those fitted with auxiliary interrupting devices) can successfully interrupt capacitive currents without unacceptable restrike or damage. The published corrigendum of June 2017 has been incorporated into the official text.

General information

  • Status: Published Technical Report (IEC TR).
  • Publication date: 25 November 2009.
  • Publisher: International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
  • ICS / categories: 29.130.10 (High voltage switchgear and controlgear).
  • Edition / version: Edition 1.0 (2009).
  • Number of pages: 17 pages (official IEC publication copy).

Scope

Applies to high‑voltage air‑insulated disconnectors with rated voltages above 52 kV. The report addresses the nature of capacitive current switching duties encountered by such disconnectors and provides laboratory test guidance to demonstrate their switching capability; it includes disconnectors that use auxiliary interrupting devices to perform the switching function.

Key topics and requirements

  • Definition and characterization of capacitive current switching duty for air‑insulated disconnectors.
  • Recommended laboratory test arrangements and instrumentation to reproduce capacitive switching conditions.
  • Performance criteria and acceptance considerations for successful interruption (restrike probability, recovery, contact behaviour).
  • Guidance for testing disconnectors fitted with auxiliary interrupting devices under capacitive switching loads.
  • Recommended switching sequences, measurement and evaluation practices to assess switching capability.

Typical use and users

Used by manufacturers of high‑voltage disconnectors and auxiliary interrupting devices, independent testing laboratories, utilities and transmission system designers to define, test and verify equipment capability for capacitive current switching. It is also referenced by standards committees and consultants involved in high‑voltage switchgear specification and type‑testing.

Related standards

Part of the IEC 62271 family dealing with high‑voltage switchgear and controlgear. Related normative and informative documents commonly referenced include IEC 62271‑1 (general rules for high‑voltage switchgear), IEC 62271‑100/102 and other parts of the 62271 series that cover specific switching devices, testing and performance requirements. Users should consult the broader IEC 62271 series for complementary requirements and national/adopted versions.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: IEC TR 62271‑305:2009 is a Technical Report that gives guidance on the capacitive current switching capability of air‑insulated disconnectors for rated voltages above 52 kV — including test guidance for devices fitted with auxiliary interrupting equipment.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers the definition of capacitive switching duties, recommended laboratory test arrangements and measurement/evaluation practices to demonstrate whether a disconnector can safely and reliably interrupt capacitive currents without unacceptable restrikes or damage.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Manufacturers, test laboratories, utilities, system designers and standards committees use this report when specifying, type‑testing or verifying high‑voltage air‑insulated disconnectors and their auxiliary interrupting devices.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: The document was published on 25 November 2009 and a corrigendum (COR1) was issued on 30 June 2017; the corrigendum has been incorporated into the official IEC copy. Users should verify national adoptions or later IEC publications for any replacements or updates, but the IEC record shows the corrigendum and a stability date associated with the publication.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes — it is one part of the IEC 62271 series covering high‑voltage switchgear and controlgear; other parts of the series address general rules, specific device types and additional testing/performance topics. Consult the IEC 62271 family for related parts and cross‑references.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Capacitive current switching, disconnector, air‑insulated, auxiliary interrupting device, type‑test, switching duty, high‑voltage switchgear.
