Full title and description

St IEC TR 62271-307-2024 — High-voltage switchgear and controlgear - Part 307: Guidance for the extension of validity of type tests of AC metal and solid-insulation enclosed switchgear and controlgear for rated voltages above 1 kV and up to and including 52 kV. This Technical Report gives guidance for extending the validity of type tests performed on representative test objects to other members of the same family of enclosed switchgear and controlgear assemblies, and covers considerations such as functional unit selection, influence of different insulation media and design modifications.

Abstract

This publication is IEC TR 62271-307, 2nd edition (2024). It updates and replaces the first edition (2015) and provides practical guidance, decision criteria and illustrative figures for extending the validity of type tests for prefabricated metal-enclosed and solid-insulation enclosed AC switchgear and controlgear for rated voltages >1 kV up to and including 52 kV. The revision updates normative references and adds guidance on extending test validity between functional units with different insulating gases and for validation of design modifications.

General information

  • Status: Published (Technical Report).
  • Publication date: 5 December 2024 (edition 2.0).
  • Publisher: International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
  • ICS / categories: 29.130.10 (High-voltage switchgear and controlgear).
  • Edition / version: Edition 2.0 (2024).
  • Number of pages: 57 pages (PDF).

Scope

This Technical Report applies to prefabricated metal-enclosed and solid-insulation enclosed switchgear and controlgear assemblies for alternating current with rated voltages above 1 kV and up to and including 52 kV, as covered by IEC 62271-200 and IEC 62271-201. It is intended to be used when extrapolating or extending type-test results obtained on one test object (or a set of functional units) to other assemblies of the same family having different ratings, arrangements or insulation media; it addresses the selection of representative test objects and provides criteria and practical guidance for safe and justified extension of test validity.

Key topics and requirements

  • Guidance on the family concept and selection of representative test objects for optimizing and extending type tests.
  • Criteria for extension of validity of type tests across different ratings, arrangements and component configurations.
  • Specific provisions for extending type-test validity between functional units having different insulating gases (e.g., guidance for GIS with insulation gas A to gas B).
  • Process and illustrative flow (including added Figure 5) for validation of design modifications and assessment of their influence on previously performed type tests.
  • Updated normative and informative references (including alignment to IEC 62271-200:2021 and IEC 62271-1:2017).
  • Use of technical, physical and experience-based reasoning combined with calculations to justify extension decisions and limit testing where appropriate.

Typical use and users

Manufacturers of high-voltage enclosed switchgear and controlgear (design and type-test planning), conformity assessment bodies and test laboratories, utilities and system operators preparing procurement specifications, standards committees and technical authors, and engineering consultancies involved in type-test evaluation and product qualification.

Related standards

Main related documents: IEC 62271-200 (assemblies - functional unit definitions and tests), IEC 62271-201 (assembly requirements), IEC 62271-1 (common specifications for high-voltage switchgear and controlgear), and relevant parts of the IEV/IEC 60050 vocabulary series referenced in the report. The publication is part of the IEC 62271 family addressing high-voltage switchgear and controlgear.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: It is IEC TR 62271-307, a Technical Report providing guidance for extending the validity of type tests for AC metal-enclosed and solid-insulation enclosed switchgear and controlgear for rated voltages above 1 kV up to 52 kV (edition 2.0, published 5 December 2024).

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers methods, criteria and practical guidance to justify using type-test results from one representative test object (or combination of functional units) for other assemblies of the same family, including considerations for different ratings, component arrangements, insulating media and design modifications.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Manufacturers (design and testing), test laboratories, conformity assessment bodies, utilities and specifiers, and standards committees and consultants involved in high-voltage switchgear product qualification.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: The 2024 edition (ed. 2.0) is the current Technical Report and cancels/replaces the first edition from 2015. Refer to the IEC publication metadata for formal withdrawal/stability dates where applicable.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes — it is Part 307 of the IEC 62271 series (high-voltage switchgear and controlgear). It is intended to be read in conjunction with other IEC 62271 parts, notably IEC 62271-1, IEC 62271-200 and IEC 62271-201.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: type tests, extension of validity, representative test object, functional unit, enclosed switchgear, insulating gas, design modification, IEC 62271.
