Full title and description
St ISO 19085-17:2021 — Woodworking machines — Safety — Part 17: Edge banding machines fed by chains. Specifies safety requirements and protective measures for chain- or belt-fed edge banding machines with manual loading/unloading and a maximum workpiece height capacity of 100 mm, intended for continuous production use.
Abstract
This International Standard specifies the significant hazards, hazardous situations and events relevant to edge banding machines fed by chains or belts and gives safety requirements and measures to eliminate or reduce risks. It covers machine design, guarding, controls, protective devices, instructions for use and phases such as transport, assembly, operation, adjustment, maintenance, dismantling and scrapping. Reasonably foreseeable misuse is considered. The standard is applicable to single‑end and double‑end machines processing panels of materials with physical characteristics similar to wood (including some light alloy core sheets) and gypsum plaster board, and to a range of edging materials and auxiliary units (for example hot‑air, laser or infrared banding units, sanding belts, milling units, automatic feed devices and workpiece supports). Exclusions and limits (for example machines for explosive atmospheres, integrated robot loading or entire production lines) are specified in the scope.

Scope
Applies to edge banding machines fed by chains or belts with manual loading and unloading, maximum workpiece height capacity of 100 mm, and intended for continuous production. Addresses hazards during intended use and reasonably foreseeable misuse, and across life‑cycle phases including transport, assembly, operation, adjustment, maintenance and disposal. Covers machines that process panels of wood and similar materials (and gypsum plaster board) and that use edging materials such as paper, melamine, plastics, composite materials, aluminium, light alloys, veneer and solid wood. The document also lists equipment and auxiliary units whose hazards are covered and identifies specific exclusions (for example robotic loading systems, lines of machines, plasma banding units and machines intended for explosive atmospheres).
Key topics and requirements
- Machine classification and definitions specific to chain‑ or belt‑fed edge banders.
- Risk assessment and identification of significant hazards (see annexes for hazardous situations).
- Protective measures and guarding requirements for infeed/outfeed, tool areas, and moving chains/belts.
- Requirements for controls, emergency stop, interlocks and safe control systems.
- Specific provisions for working units: hot air, laser, infrared banding units, sanding and milling units, automatic feed devices and tool‑changing systems.
- Requirements for marking, warnings, and comprehensive instructions for safe use, adjustment and maintenance.
- Limits of applicability and exclusions (e.g., integration with other machines, robotic loading, explosive atmospheres).
- Consideration of maintenance, assembly/disassembly, transport and scrapping phases in risk reduction.
Typical use and users
Used by machine manufacturers and designers to design and certify chain‑fed edge banding machines; by conformity assessment bodies and notified bodies for safety assessment; by factory safety engineers and purchasers to specify safe equipment; and by maintenance and service personnel for safe adjustment, servicing and repair. Also used by standards committees, technical trainers and regulators involved in woodworking machinery safety.
Related standards
Part of the ISO 19085 series (general rules and other machine‑specific parts). Replaces/updates the earlier ISO 18217 series for this machine type. Normative and related references typically include ISO 19085‑1 (general requirements), EN/ISO standards for woodworking tools and tool shanks (for example EN 847‑1 and EN 847‑2), and relevant electrical and laser safety standards such as IEC 60825‑1 for laser banding units.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 19085-17:2021 is an international standard specifying safety requirements for edge banding machines fed by chains or belts (maximum workpiece height 100 mm), covering hazards, protective measures and information for safe use.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers design and safety measures for chain‑ or belt‑fed edge banding machines (single‑end and double‑end), including guarding, controls, protective devices, auxiliary units (hot‑air, laser, IR, sanding, milling, automatic feed), and life‑cycle phases such as transport, installation, operation, maintenance and disposal. It also states exclusions and limits of applicability.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Machine manufacturers, designers, conformity assessment bodies, safety engineers, maintenance personnel, equipment purchasers and regulators concerned with woodworking machinery safety.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: The current edition was published in May 2021 (Edition 1, 2021). It replaces the previous ISO 18217 series for this machine type. Users should check national adoption or amendments and any revision activity if up‑to‑date compliance is required.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — it is part of the ISO 19085 series (Woodworking machines — Safety), which includes a general requirements part and multiple machine‑specific parts addressing safety for different woodworking machines.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Edge banding, edge bander, chain-fed, belt-fed, woodworking machine safety, ISO 19085-17, guarding, risk assessment, emergency stop, laser banding.
