Full title and description
ISO 19085-7:2024 — Woodworking machines — Safety — Part 7: Surface planing, thickness planing and combined surface/thickness planing machines. This international standard specifies safety requirements and measures for surface planing (jointers), thickness planing (planers) and combined surface/thickness planing machines intended for continuous production use and for cutting solid wood and similar materials.
Abstract
This document addresses significant hazards, hazardous situations and events relevant to the specified planing machines when operated, adjusted and maintained as intended (including reasonably foreseeable misuse). It covers design, guarding, feeding, emergency stopping, maintenance and transport/assembly/disposal phases, and is also applicable to machines fitted with an optional mortising device (with stated exceptions for certain machine types and configurations listed in the standard).
General information

- Number of pages: 47 pages.
Scope
Specifies safety requirements and measures for surface planing machines (jointers), thickness planing machines (planers / single-surface planers) and combined surface/thickness planing machines with a fixed cutter block position and integrated feed in thickness planing mode. The standard applies to machines with manual loading/unloading and with or without demountable power feed devices in planing mode, designed to cut solid wood and materials with similar physical characteristics. It excludes machines such as those with multiple cutter blocks, separately motor-driven mortising units, cutter blocks adjustable for depth of cut in thicknessing mode, machines where conversion between modes is achieved by mounting/demounting parts, machines performing surfacing and thicknessing simultaneously on the same cutterblock section, machines intended for potentially explosive atmospheres, and machines manufactured before publication of the document. Transport, assembly, dismantling, disabling and scrapping are also considered.
Key topics and requirements
- Definitions and machine classification (surface planing, thickness planing, combined machines).
- Hazard identification and risk reduction measures for cutting, entanglement, ejection, noise, vibration and dust exposure.
- Requirements for guards and interlocking devices to protect access to cutter block and feed systems.
- Feed device and infeed/outfeed zone safety (including optional power feed, demountable feeds and integrated feed arrangements).
- Controls and emergency stop provisions, marking and operator controls ergonomics.
- Maintenance, adjustment and safe access requirements (lock-off, isolation, safe work procedures).
- Requirements for documentation, instructions for safe use, and information to be supplied by the manufacturer.
- Normative references and risk assessment guidance (applies ISO 19085-1 common requirements and ISO 12100 risk reduction principles; references include EN 847-1 and other material/test standards).
Typical use and users
Used by machine manufacturers and designers to ensure machine safety design and compliance; by safety engineers and compliance officers for machine selection and conformity assessment; by test laboratories and certification bodies for type testing; and by end-users (workshops, production facilities, vocational schools) to understand safe operation, maintenance and guarding requirements.
Related standards
ISO 19085-7:2024 is part of the ISO 19085 series on safety of woodworking machines. Relevant related documents include ISO 19085-1 (Common requirements, 2021), and other part-specific standards in the series such as ISO 19085-8:2024 (wide belt sanding and surface treating machines) and ISO 19085-11:2024 (combined machines). General machine safety guidance (ISO 12100) and tool standards (e.g., EN 847-1) are also normative references used together with this part.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 19085-7:2024 is the part of the ISO 19085 series that sets safety requirements for surface planing, thickness planing and combined surface/thickness planing woodworking machines (Edition 2, published 28 August 2024).
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers design and protective measures addressing significant hazards for the specified planing machines when used, adjusted and maintained as intended — including guarding, feed systems, controls, emergency stopping, maintenance access, documentation and reasonably foreseeable misuse; it also lists specific exclusions (e.g., machines with multiple cutter blocks or machines for explosive atmospheres).
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Machine manufacturers, designers, safety and compliance professionals, test labs, certification bodies and end-users (industrial workshops, vocational schools) use this standard to design, assess, certify and operate planing machines safely.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO 19085-7:2024 is the current published edition (Edition 2, 2024) and replaces ISO 19085-7:2019 (the 2019 edition was withdrawn when the 2024 edition was published).
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — it is one part of the ISO 19085 series on woodworking-machine safety; ISO 19085-1 provides common requirements and other parts address additional machine types and special topics.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Key keywords include surface planing, thickness planing, jointer, planer, cutterblock, feed device, guards, emergency stop, woodworking machine safety, ISO 19085.
