Full title and description

Textiles — Qualitative and quantitative analysis of some cellulose fibres (lyocell, cupro) and their blends — Part 1: Fibre identification using scanning electron microscopy and spectral analysis methods. This part specifies qualitative identification methods for cupro and lyocell fibres (and their blends) using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and spectral analysis techniques.

Abstract

This document gives procedures for qualitative analysis of cupro and lyocell fibres using two separate approaches: a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) method (based on ISO 20705) and spectral analysis methods. It applies only to cupro and lyocell (and blends of these); if other fibres are present they should be identified using ISO/TR 11827 and removed following the appropriate parts of the ISO 1833 series. The methods are not applicable if the fibre surface has been chemically or physically damaged.

General information

  • Status: Published
  • Publication date: April 2020
  • Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO)
  • ICS / categories: 59.060.01 (Textile fibres)
  • Edition / version: Edition 1 (2020)
  • Number of pages: 21

Scope

Specifies qualitative identification methods for cupro and lyocell fibres and their blends using SEM and spectral analysis. The scope is limited to these fibre types; when other fibres are present they must first be identified (for example using ISO/TR 11827) and separated or removed as specified by the ISO 1833 series. The standard excludes cases where the fibre surface is altered or damaged so that identification methods cannot be applied reliably.

Key topics and requirements

  • SEM-based identification procedure and requirements (reference to ISO 20705 application).
  • Spectral analysis techniques for fibre identification (infrared/other applicable spectral methods described in the standard).
  • Sample preparation and precautions to avoid surface damage that would invalidate the methods.
  • Limits of applicability — applies only to cupro, lyocell and their blends; treatment of other fibres via ISO/TR 11827 and ISO 1833 series.
  • Reporting requirements and interpretation guidance for qualitative identification results.

Typical use and users

Used by textile testing laboratories, quality control and R&D teams in fibre and fabric manufacturing, forensic and conformity-assessment bodies, standards developers, and academic researchers working on fibre identification and textile analysis. Typical uses include raw-material verification, incoming quality control, investigation of blended fabrics, and laboratory method standardization.

Related standards

ISO 21915 is a multi-part series; related parts published in 2020 include Part 2 (Blend quantification using light microscopy) and Part 3 (Blend quantification using spectral analysis). The series also references ISO 20705 (microscopical analysis), ISO/TR 11827 (fibre identification guidance) and the ISO 1833 series (quantitative chemical separation methods for fibre mixtures).

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 21915-1:2020 is an international standard that specifies qualitative identification methods for two cellulose-derived fibres — cupro and lyocell — using SEM and spectral analysis techniques.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers procedures, sample preparation requirements, limitations and reporting guidance for identifying cupro and lyocell fibres and their blends by SEM and spectral methods; it does not cover quantitative blend analysis (covered in other parts of the series) and is not applicable when fibre surfaces are damaged.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Textile and materials testing laboratories, manufacturers and suppliers performing fibre verification and quality control, forensic laboratories, and researchers in textile analysis.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: ISO 21915-1 was published in April 2020 (Edition 1) and is published/maintained by ISO. Users should check the ISO catalogue or their national standards body for any subsequent confirmations, amendments or revisions beyond the 2020 edition.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes — ISO 21915 is a multipart series. Part 1 covers qualitative identification (this document), Part 2 covers blend quantification using light microscopy, and Part 3 covers blend quantification using spectral analysis; all were published in 2020 as related parts of the same series.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Cupro; lyocell; fibre identification; scanning electron microscopy; spectral analysis; textile testing; blend analysis; ISO 21915.
