Full title and description
IEC 61869-6:2016 — Instrument transformers — Part 6: Additional general requirements for low‑power instrument transformers. This part of the IEC 61869 series gives additional general requirements specific to low‑power instrument transformers (LPIT) used for a.c. applications (rated frequencies 15 Hz to 100 Hz) across MV, HV and EHV and for some d.c. applications. It is written to be used together with IEC 61869-1 and the relevant product-specific parts of the series.
Abstract
This standard specifies additional ratings, design, construction and test requirements for low‑power instrument transformers (LPIT). It defines accuracy and error requirements for analogue and digital outputs, considers bandwidth and anti‑aliasing requirements, and contains normative and informative annexes covering harmonic accuracy, transient performance and typical test circuits. IEC 61869-6:2016 consolidates and replaces earlier parts of IEC 60044 relating to LPITs.

Scope
IEC 61869-6:2016 is a product-family standard that provides additional general requirements for low‑power instrument transformers (LPIT). It applies to LPITs for a.c. applications with rated frequencies from 15 Hz to 100 Hz (covering medium, high and extra-high voltage systems) and to applicable d.c. uses. The part addresses accuracy, bandwidth and interface error definitions for analogue and digital outputs, and is intended to be read in conjunction with IEC 61869-1 and relevant product-specific parts of the IEC 61869 series.
Key topics and requirements
- Definitions and terms specific to LPITs (ratings, insulation, accuracy, bandwidth).
- Normal and special service conditions (environmental, mounting, vibrations, partially outdoor LPITs).
- Ratings: rated frequencies, voltage and insulation levels, auxiliary supply ratings where applicable.
- Design and construction requirements for LPITs and their secondary terminals and interfaces.
- Tests: type, routine and special tests for performance, insulation, mechanical and environmental behaviour.
- Accuracy requirements including harmonic response and extension of accuracy classes (normative Annex 6A).
- Transient performance guidance for current and voltage LPITs (informative annexes on transient behaviour).
- Bandwidth and anti‑aliasing filter requirements for devices providing digital outputs.
- Information to be supplied with enquiries, tenders and orders (data requirements and specification items).
Typical use and users
Used by manufacturers and designers of low‑power instrument transformers and sensors, utility and transmission/substation engineers, protection and metering equipment manufacturers, testing and calibration laboratories, and procurement/specification teams who need to define performance, testing and interface requirements for LPITs in power systems.
Related standards
IEC 61869-6 is part of the IEC 61869 series (instrument transformers) and is intended to be used with IEC 61869-1 (general requirements). Other related parts include IEC 61869-7, IEC 61869-8 and IEC 61869-9 (digital interface and related topics). IEC 61869-6:2016 replaced relevant parts of IEC 60044-7 and IEC 60044-8; regional/adopted versions include EN 61869-6:2016 and subsequent updates (for example EN/UNE editions published after 2016). Note: the IEC record shows this edition was withdrawn/replaced in later consolidated updates of the 61869 series.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: IEC 61869-6:2016 is the part of the IEC 61869 series that provides additional general requirements for low‑power instrument transformers (LPIT), supplementing the general requirements in IEC 61869-1 and product‑specific parts.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers ratings, design and construction, tests, accuracy and error definitions for analogue and digital outputs, bandwidth and anti‑aliasing considerations, harmonic and transient performance (including normative and informative annexes) for LPITs used on AC systems (15–100 Hz) and applicable DC uses.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Manufacturers of LPITs and sensors, substation and transmission engineers, protection and metering equipment designers, testing and calibration laboratories, standards committees and procurement/specification teams.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: IEC 61869-6:2016 is a 2016 edition. The IEC product record indicates that this publication has been withdrawn/replaced as the 61869 series has been consolidated and updated (withdrawal noted on 2023-06-14 at IEC). Regional bodies have also issued subsequent editions/adoptions (for example a 2019 EN adoption). Always check for the most recent edition or consolidated 61869 publications before specifying or purchasing.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — IEC 61869 is a multi‑part series covering instrument transformers. Part 1 contains general requirements; other parts (for example 3, 7, 8, 9) cover product‑specific requirements and digital interfaces. IEC 61869-6 specifically addresses LPITs within that series.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: LPIT, low‑power instrument transformer, instrument transformer, accuracy, harmonic response, bandwidth, anti‑aliasing, IEC 61869, metering, protection, transient performance.
